摘要: Armor components having a ceramic substrate, a thermal sprayed barrier coating covering the substrate material to form a barrier coated substrate, and an outermost encapsulation of metal generally surrounding at least the periphery of the barrier coated substrate are disclosed herein. The encapsulation of metal was cast to the ceramic substrate as molten metal, and the thermal sprayed barrier coating comprises a cermet material, a ceramic material, or a combination thereof. The ceramic substrate is preferably a ceramic tile for ballistic armor. Also disclosed are armor components having a plurality of the ceramic tiles interconnected by the encapsulation of metal, with the metal, which was casted thereto, surrounding at least the periphery of each of the plurality of the armor components.

摘要: A rolling door slat designed to deflect, redirect or absorb severe force is disclosed. The present invention utilizes a double slat design with layered joints, and an open volume enclosing a reinforced core. The reinforced core of the present invention consists of either a solid block of dense, protective material, or layers of material. The layers of material serve to both deflect and absorb impact and blast force, resist vertical force, as well as provide more traditional rolling door functions such as fire resistance or sound and heat insulation.

摘要: Methods for forming armored glass cylinders suitable for improving resistance of armor to armor piercing rounds, explosively formed penetrators, or other threats. Cool a cylindrical glass or ceramic element to a temperature below that of a cylindrical casing, place the cylindrical glass or ceramic element into the cylindrical casing while the cylindrical glass or ceramic element is cool, and seal the cylindrical casing and allow the temperature of the cylindrical glass or ceramic element to rise, such that the cylindrical casing compresses the cylindrical glass or ceramic element. Alternately, heat a metal cylindrical casing, press glass or ceramic into the cylinder while the metal cylinder is at an elevated temperature, seal the metal cylindrical casing while metal cylindrical casinger is at an elevated temperature, and allow the metal cylinder to cool, such that when cooled, the cylindrical casing will compress the glass in all directions.

摘要: According to an embodiment, a ballistic protection material includes a strike face layer having a first thickness. The strike face layer is configured to distort an outer surface on a projectile that contacts the strike face layer. A ballistic layer is configured to hinder continued movement of a projectile that has passed through the strike face layer. A spacer layer is situated between the strike face layer and the ballistic layer. The spacer layer has a second thickness that is greater than the first thickness. The second thickness of the spacer layer provides a selected distance between the strike face layer and the ballistic layer.

摘要: A durable ceramic and metallic coating has been applied to ceramic tiles to protect the tiles while undergoing a molten metal casting operation. The plasma sprayed coating consists of a ceramic top coat layer of aluminum oxide, zirconium oxide, or other oxides with or without a metallic bond coat layer and with or without a functionally gradient coating. This coating protects the underlying ceramic tile, which is composed of boron carbide, silicon carbide, alumina (Al2O3) or other type of hard ceramic, from reacting chemically with the molten metal. The molten metal is cast around the ceramic tiles to create a lattice of ceramic tiles that are used for protection from projectiles and shrapnel.
