A control system for operation of the individual sections of a glassware forming machine includes a shaft position encoder associated with the mechanical drive for the feeder, and a digital computer for programming various events in the machine cycle in accordance with certain boundary event timings. The shaft encoder output is converted to binary coded decimal (BCD) form and is fed to the digital computer through a priority program which permits routine starting and stopping of the machine and its various sections, and which also includes manual means for setting up the desired cycle of operation for the various mechanisms associated with a given section and for later transferring these settings to the other sections of the machine with operation of each section being phase delayed in accordance with a predetermined ''''firing order''''. These settings can be revised during operation of the machine as a result of the program stored in the digital computer. In addition, limits may be imposed upon the revisions which will be permitted.

A programmable sequencer 10 uses an input mapping circuit 20 including a programmable logic array 30 to map decision variable input conditions onto branch address signals, which are used with primary address signals to form a next state address for state word memory 50. Input mapping circuit 20 preferably includes a branch control circuit 40, controlled by feedback signals from the output of state word memory 50, to selectively transform branch address signals to allow different states to use state word locations sharing the same primary address in state word memory 50. The preferred embodiment also includes a diagnostic circuit 80 useful for programming, and/or diagnosing operation of, sequencer 10.

The readily changeable operator inserted instructions are entered via a control/display unit (135), which displays information about the function and changes being made when the instructions are being entered.

A precision key pad controlled controller for a resistance welding machine is provided which may be set to deliver welding power to each of a multiplicity of welding operations on a precisely controlled repeatable basis. The controller incorporates circuitry for assuring that an accurately controlled amount of power is delivered for each welding operation by providing precise phase angle control despite variations in line voltage and line disturbances. The controller is constructed to incorporate selected numbers of steps to be performed automatically in sequence by the controlled welding machine in carrying out a particular welding operation. The duration of each step of the welding machine, the amount of welding power to be delivered, and other parameters are set for each particular welding operation by the key pad, and displayed on an associated alphanumeric display.
