The method includes filtering a noise signal representative of road noise with a first fixed filter to provide an attenuation signal, and filtering the attenuation signal with an adaptive filter to provide a first filtered attenuation signal. The first filtered attenuation signal is provided to an electro-acoustic transducer for transduction to acoustic energy, thereby to attenuate the road noise in a vehicle cabin at an expected position of an occupant's ears. The method also includes receiving a microphone signal representative of the acoustic energy, filtering the attenuation signal with a second fixed filter to provide a second filtered attenuation signal, and updating a set of variable filter coefficients of the adaptive filter based on the microphone signal and the second filtered attenuation signal to accommodate for variations in a transfer function of the speaker.

A method for determining an estimation of a secondary path transfer characteristic in an ANC system is described herein. In accordance with one example of the invention, the method includes the positioning of a microphone array in a listening room symmetrically with respect to a desired listening position and reproducing at least one test signal using a loudspeaker arranged within the listening room to generate an acoustic signal. The acoustic signal is measured with the microphones of the microphone array to obtain a microphone signal from each microphone of the microphone array, and a numerical representation of the secondary path transfer characteristic is calculated for each microphone signal based on the test signal and the respective microphone signal. The method further includes averaging the calculated numerical representations of the secondary path transfer characteristic to obtain the estimation of the secondary path transfer characteristic to be used in the ANC system.

A vehicle processor transmits a simulated noise signal to a second loudspeaker for use in testing effectiveness of the active noise control arrangement in attenuating noise when the engine and/or powertrain is not running and not producing noise.

Concretely, the active vibration noise control device includes an attenuating unit which attenuates a control signal generated by an adaptive notch filter, and provides the attenuated control signal to the speaker, when amplitude of a filter coefficient is larger than a threshold. Therefore, it is possible to suppress continuous ups and downs of the filter coefficient during an occurrence of an abnormality. Hence, it becomes possible to appropriately suppress an occurrence of a cyclic abnormal sound and an increase in the vibration noise during the occurrence of the abnormality.
