A method of producing a tracking control signal in a rotary head type magnetic recording and reproducing apparatus and a rotary head type magnetic recording and reproducing apparatus capable of a proper tracking by the use of the tracking control signal. First and second tracking signals are recorded on local portions of each odd-numbered track and the first tracking signal and a third tracking signal are recorded on local portions of each even-numbered track in such a manner that the second tracking signals on two odd-numbered track adjacent to any one even-numbered track are not overlapped with each other and the third tracking signals on two even-numbered tracks adjacent to any one odd-numbered track are not overlapped with each other when viewed in a direction perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the tracks; upon scanning of a track crosstalk signals are detected from two adjacent track simultaneously with reproduction of the first and second or third tracking signals; and the detected crosstalk signals are compared by the use of timing of the reproduction of the first tracking signal for each track thereby producing a tracking control signal. The second tracking signal may have a frequency equal to that of the third tracking frequency.

A tracking control system is used for a magnetic recording and/or reproducing apparatus in which a magnetic head relatively scans a magnetic recording medium to record and/or reproduce an information signal thereon and/or therefrom. The tracking control system comprises a circuit for supplying a tracking reference signal to the magnetic head together with the information signal. The reference signal supplying circuit supplies the tracking reference signal to the magnetic head so that the magnetic head is positioned at a position where the recorded position of a tracking reference signal on both sides of the tracks adjacent to a certain track is positioned successively shifted respectively to the track longitudinal direction with respect to the tracking reference signal recorded position at the certain track. The tracking control system further comprises a discriminating circuit for discriminating the relative phase with respect to a normal tracking reference signal of a tracking reference signal reproduced as cross-talk from a track adjacent to the track which is to be scanned, according to the normal tracking reference signal reproduced from a normal track which is to be scanned by the magnetic head, from within the signal reproduced by the reproducing means, a tracking error signal deriving circuit for deriving a tracking error signal from the output signal of the discriminating circuit, and a controlling circuit for controlling the relative scanning phase of the magnetic head with respect to the track of the magnetic recording medium by obtaining the mean value component of the tracking error signal from each plurality of tracks out of the tracking error signals.

A tracking error detecting circuit is used in a magnetic reproducing apparatus for reproducing an information signal from tracks which are formed on a magnetic tape obliquely in a longitudinal direction of the magnetic tape. The tracks have selectively recorded thereon a pilot signal multiplexed with the information signal. The tracking error detecting circuit comprises: a rotating magnetic head scanning the tracks for reproducing the information signal on which the pilot signal is selectively multiplexed to obtain a reproduced signal; a comparator for comparing a level of the reproduced signal with a specified level and for issuing a binary signal representing a comparison result; and a level detecting circuit for detecting a level of the pilot signal contained in the reproduced signal from an output of the comparator.

In one embodiment, the head carrier assembly is provided at an oblique angle with respect to the data tape and the front surface is conically shaped. Thus, during rotation of the head carrier assembly, the recording heads are proximate to the data tape during read or write operations, but are spaced away from the data tape at other times. The head carrier assembly includes an inside-out spin motor for rotating the head carrier assembly and a pivot motor structure at the rear of the head carrier assembly for pivoting the head carrier assembly in a plane perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of advancement of the tape. The spin motor and pivoting structures receive servo signals from a controller so as to continuously adjust the position of the core elements with respect to the data tape so as to align the core elements with the arcuately-shaped data tracks.

Situated within the base and cover is a head carrier assembly for recording data onto and playing back data from the data tape which advances in a longitudinal direction past the head carrier assembly. In one embodiment, the head carrier assembly is provided at an oblique angle with respect to the data tape and the front surface is conically shaped. A tape medium recording and/or reproducing apparatus suited for use in recording or reproducing information on or from a plurality of tracks on a tape medium. Each track has first and second regions defined therein in a direction conforming to the direction of scan. Each first region has a positioning signal recorded therein while a tracking pilot signal is recorded in selected ones of the first regions. The apparatus includes a positioning signal detector for detecting the positioning signal to provide a reproducing position signal, and a reproduction timing generator for generating a reproduction timing signal at a first timing determined by the reproducing position signal. A timing memory is provided to store the length of time from the timing, at which the rotational reference position of a cylinder has been detected, to the first timing. When no positioning signal can be detected, a timing protector generates a pseudo timing signal based on a previously detected timing stored in the timing memory and also for combining the pseudo timing signal with the reproduction timing signal to provide a protection timing signal. A tracking control section performs tracking control in reference to a level determined by the pilot signals sampled by the sample timing signal. The apparatus can perform insert-recording by determining the timing therefor based on the reproduction timing signal.
