Abstract:
An apparatus for detecting an open neutral condition in a split phase power system is described. The apparatus includes two powered lines providing output electricity to an electrical distribution system and a shared neutral line providing a grounded neutral to the first and second powered lines. The apparatus is configured for detecting when an open neutral condition is present in the split phase power system by determining when a power current is present on one or both of the first and second powered lines while a return current is not present on the neutral line; and in response to detecting that the open neutral condition is present, causing an interrupter to interrupt the power supplied by the first and second powered lines or to generate a signal indicating an open condition.
Abstract:
The invention relates to a method and to an electrical protection device for detecting a disconnection of a protective conductor connection with a subsystem in ungrounded and grounded power supply systems and in a grounded power supply system comprising a converter system. The invention is based on the idea that the disconnection of the protective conductor connection with a subsystem will reduce the sum of the network leakage capacitances of the power supply system by the value of the network leakage capacitance of the subsystem. The necessary distinction between a subsystem in operation having a disconnected protective conductor connection and a shut-off subsystem is made by evaluating the current total power consumed via the power supply system. In the case of a converter system connected to the subsystem, the protective conductor disconnection is detected by examining the leakage current spectra that are characteristic of the converter system.
Abstract:
A system and method for detecting the presence of a voltage on a ground conductor which is coupled to a protective Earth (PE) terminal associated with a power source. The power source is used to apply a voltage to a device. The system may use a high impedance device coupled across a switch, with the switch being in communication with a portion of the device. A control system may monitor a voltage across the high impedance device and determine if the voltage across the high impedance device exceeds a predetermined threshold. Exceeding the predetermined threshold indicates that an unsafe voltage from the power source is present on the ground conductor. A natural high impedance path between the device and the Earth is used to provide an Earth connection through the device to the Earth during operation of the system.
Abstract:
A device for monitoring a neutral grounding resistor (NGR), including first and second NGRs electrically connected in parallel, a rectifier circuit electrically connected in series with the second NGR and a voltage source and a logic resistor electrically connected in series with the second NGR. A logic circuit measures current passing through the logic resistor and determines the resistance of the first NGR based on the measured current and the resistance of the second NGR. As such, a failed-open or failed-short condition of the first NGR may be identified based at least in part on the determined resistance of the first NGR.

Abstract:
A power system is for a facility. The power system includes a load panel powered from a split phase electrical distribution configuration having a first line, a second line and a neutral. A two-pole circuit interrupter in the load panel receives power from the first line, the second line and the neutral, and protects an unbalanced load. The two-pole circuit interrupter is structured to trip open or open responsive to an input. A circuit in the load panel is structured to determine that the neutral is broken or missing and responsively output to the input to cause the two-pole circuit interrupter to trip open or open.
Abstract:
A circuit for indicating a broken or missing neutral in a split phase electrical distribution configuration having an unbalanced load includes: a voltage divider configured to divide the voltage difference between a first line and a second line and to output the divided voltage difference as a virtual neutral; a rectifier including an input of the virtual neutral, the neutral, and an output, the rectifier configured to rectify a voltage difference between the virtual neutral and the neutral; a determination circuit including an input of the rectified voltage difference, a reference voltage and an output, the determination circuit configured to determine if the neutral is missing or broken based on the rectified voltage difference and the reference voltage; and an indicator circuit configured to indicate when the neutral is missing or broken based on the output of the determination circuit.
Abstract:
The present invention is directed to a protective device configured to be coupled between an AC power source and an electrical load. A ground continuity monitor is coupled to the ground conductor, the ground continuity monitor being configured to detect a ground discontinuity condition in the ground conductor. A circuit interrupter mechanism is configured to interrupt electrical continuity in a tripped state and establish electrical continuity in a reset state. A self-test circuit is coupled to the ground continuity monitor and configured to perform a simulated ground continuity test that simulates the ground discontinuity condition. The self-test circuit provides a test failure signal when the ground continuity monitor fails to provide an output signal in response to the simulated ground continuity test. The test failure signal is configured to trip the circuit interrupter mechanism.
Abstract:
A method for detecting predetermined fault conditions associated with the supply of AC electrical power to a consumer, the supply having an active conductor and a neutral conductor with the neutral conductor being connected to earth. The method comprises providing a first current detector associated with the active conductor, providing a second current detector associated with the neutral conductor; providing a voltage detector to detect voltage between the active conductor and the neutral conductor, and checking a current ratio of neutral current to active current whereby the current ratio is indicative of a predetermined fault condition. Also disclosed is a method of checking the condition of supply line active and neutral conductors in a consumer's supplied premises including determining the impedance of the active conductor and the impedance of the neutral conductor to indicate the condition of each of the active and neutral conductors.
Abstract:
The present disclosure provides a safe quick disconnect leakage protector, including a power supply circuit, a sampling circuit, a couple of single-pole single-throws, an on and off control circuit, and a testing circuit. The sampling circuit collects the leakage current signal between the live wire and the neutral wire and outputting the leakage current signal; the main control circuit receives the leakage current signal outputted from the sampling circuit, amplifies the leakage current signal, and outputs a grounding failure control signal when the leakage current reaches the predetermined value; the on and off control circuit receives the grounding failure control signal outputted from the main control circuit and controls the single-pole single-throw switches to disconnect the load from the external power supply according to the grounding failure control signal, thereby protecting the load and improves the safety of the leakage protection of an electrical appliance.
