摘要: A fault managed power system (FMPS) and method monitors and detects fault currents in PoE, PFC, and other cables that indicate likely human contact with cable conductors. The level of current detected through the human body combined with a fast response time limits the energy to prevent a person from experiencing ventricular fibrillation, resulting in a so-called touch-safe level. For overload and short-circuit fault protection, the system automatically and immediately removes power from the cables. This limits the amount of energy provided into the fault, thereby maintaining touch-safe operation and also preventing electrical fires and system component protection. The system/method can accomplish this even at voltage levels considerably higher than existing touch-safe standards, for example, Class 2 (below 50 Vac) power supplies. Such a system/method allows the amount of power in applications like PoE and PFC to be safely increased to levels much greater than the current maximum (100 W).

摘要: A circuit for mitigating electric shock including an external impedance detection circuit and a test and holdoff circuit. The external impedance detection circuit detects a presence of an external impedance, such as by detecting a relative change in voltage from a startup condition and a test condition. The test and holdoff circuit inhibits operation of a power converter which delivers power to be consumed by a load. The startup condition is defined by mains power applied to the circuit with negligible power consumed by a load. The test condition is defined by non-zero power delivered to the load. According to another aspect, the external impedance detection circuit measures an input voltage using a high input power which is greater than a shock hazard threshold at a duration less than a threshold time duration and determines the presence of the external impedance based on low pass filters having different time constants.

摘要: A circuit for discharging an X capacitor includes an AC detection unit, a reset unit, a counter, and a discharging unit. The AC detection unit is coupled to two terminals of the X capacitor through a pin. The AC detection unit has a plurality of reference levels for detecting a DC voltage level according to the plurality of reference levels, and outputting a detection signal. The reset unit is coupled to the AC detection unit for generating a reset signal according to the detection signal. The counter is coupled to the reset unit for being reset according to the reset signal. When the counter does not receive the reset signal within a first predetermined time, the counter generates a turning-on signal. The discharging unit is coupled to the counter for discharging the X capacitor according to the turning-on signal.

摘要: The invention provides an apparatus for shunting leakage current of a solid state switching device (SSSD) (10). The apparatus selectively provides a shunt pathway to divert current away from the output load based on the switching state of the SSSD. The apparatus may include a shunt impedance component (14) connected to the SSSD, and a switching element (16) for selectively connecting the other end of the shunt impedance component to ground based on the switching state of the SSSD. Accordingly, when the SSSD is turned off, the switching element is switched to a state that connects the shunt impedance component to ground, thereby shunting leakage current.
