The present invention provides a method and apparatus for processing a charging request. Upon receipt of the charging request, a merged charging System will determine the types of all charging activities related to the charging request and a charging entity corresponding to each type of the charging activities based on the information contained in the charging request. First, some rules are preset in the merged charging System; then, these rules are executed in sequence based on the information contained in the charging request, and for a rule whose condition is met, its corresponding charging entity is determined. Next, charging is performed simultaneously on all the determined charging entities, and a piece of charging information record is generated for each of the charging entities. By using the present method, the merging of B2C charging and B2B charging can be implemented with only one charging System, which covers almost all charging activities; and thereby the present invention can dramatically reduce the costs for construction and maintenance, save valuable network resources, and improve processing efficiency.

Apparatus and a method of obtaining revenue for Short Message Service (SMS) messages for a destination network of an SMS message. The destination network checks whether an SMS message is spam (unwanted content). If so, the destination network checks whether the source network as identified in the SMS message is consistent with the identity of the domain of the source of the message and the sender is either chargeable or from a trusted network. If both tests pass, the sender is charged for the spam message. If the message is then delivered to the destination, the destination network collects a portion of the revenue received by the source network. If the message is not delivered, then, optionally, the destination network can charge the source network for the spam filtering costs. For detected spam messages, a spam warning message is sent to the source (i.e., the spammer). Advantageously, the destination network receives compensation for processing spam messages, and the spammer is warned.

The present invention relates to a communication method and system, and more particularly, to a wireless communication system in which free public Internet access is provided to wireless communication devices via an appropriate wireless communication protocol such as, for example, 802.11b or Bluetooth. A clearing-house server is arranged to manage a pool of money and to distribute that money according to a distribution policy. The distribution policy is intended to compensate owners of various parts of the communication system infrastructure for providing free Internet access. For example, an ISP owner may be compensated for allowing the wireless base station to make its spare bandwidth available for use by members of the public to access the Internet, while concurrently maintaining sufficient bandwidth for its conventional users. Advantageously, the ISP owner is not adversely affected, from a financial perspective, by the wireless base station owner making their spare bandwidth available for use by the public.
