摘要: A heat and moisture exchanger for both conducting a stream of air produced by a ventilator to a moisturizing medium and internally bypassing the moisturizing medium if aerosolized medication is introduced into the stream includes a housing having a ventilator-side port coupled to an outlet of a ventilator and a source of aerosolized medication. The housing has a patient-side port for coupling to a patient to provide ventilation including either air or air carrying aerosolized medication. A first path conducts air from the ventilator-side port through the moisturizing medium and the patient-side port, and a second path conducts air carrying aerosolized medication from the ventilator-side port directly to the patient-side port. A two-way valve mechanism in the housing selectively couples the ventilator-side port into fluid communication with one or the other of the first and second paths.

摘要: A process for the recovery of halogenated hydrocarbons from a gas stream comprises passing the gas stream through a bed of hydrophobic molecular sieve adsorbent, preferably of the high silica zeolite type. Such adsorbent has pore diameters large enough to permit molecules of the halogenated hydrocarbons to pass therethrough and be selectively adsorbed in the large internal cavities of the crystal framework, whereby the halogenated hydrocarbons are removed. The gas is continued to be passed through the bed of adsorbent material until the material is saturated to the extent that breakthrough of the hydrocarbons is determined. The adsorbent material with adsorb phase of halogenated hydrocarbons is removed from the machine and regenerated by exposing the saturated material to an inert purging gas stream under conditions which desorb the halogenated hydrocarbons from the adsorbent material into the purging gas stream. The halogenated hydrocarbons are then removed from the purging gas stream and purified to a purity for reuse of the recovered halogenated hydrocarbons.

摘要: An improved nasal inhalation system is provided for vaporizing a selected medicament or the like and for convenient inhalation of the resultant vapors. In one form, the inhalation system comprises a nozzle mounted at the discharge end of a source of air flow, preferably a heated air flow, wherein the nozzle is shaped to support a medicament-containing inhaler tube for flow-through passage of the air flow to produce medicinal vapors. A conveniently sterilizable vented adapter sleeve may be carried about the inhaler tube and/or mounted on the nozzle to prevent human contact with the inhaler tube and to limit the quantitative air flow to a person's nostrils. In an alternative form, a plurality of inhaler tubes are supported within a turret assembly mounted at the discharge end of the air flow source and rotatable to align a selected one of the inhaler tubes with an open discharge tube thereby permitting flow-through passage of air.

摘要: Direct-acting respirator arrangement capable of convenient sterilization in minimal time following each use, through structuring which permits integral removal of those component parts of the respirator that come into contact with the respiratory gas flow. There is provided a fixed structure incorporating a pump unit which is comprised of a variable volume chamber having a fixed wall part supported in the structure and a movable wall part operatively connected to a driven reciprocating movement element. The fixed wall part of the chamber is rigidly attached to a member through which at least the chamber feed and delivery lines extend. The member is provided with means enabling releasable connection to the structure. The movable wall part is provided with means for releasable connection to the reciprocating element.

摘要: A general anesthesia rebreathing system comprised of a disposable portion adapted to be easily coupled to and decoupled from a permanent portion. The system is designed so as to minimize the structural complexity and cost of the disposable portion while assuring that the disposable portion includes all elements which are likely to contaminate gases inhaled by a patient. The disposable portion includes conventional breathing tubing for coupling a source of fresh gas, as from an anesthesia machine, to a patient and in addition an overflow tube for coupling the patient end of the system to an overflow (pop-off) valve, preferably mounted on the machine and constituting part of the permanent portion. The overflow tube entrance is located close to the patient end of the system and in communication with the tubing which conveys expired gas to a reservoir, such as a conventional breathing bag, mounted at the machine end. The arrangement assures that the patient's initially expired dead space gas is conveyed by the tubing to the reservoir with subsequently expired alveolar gas being exhausted through the overflow tube and pop-off valve. By preferentially exhausting alveolar gas in this manner, the need for using CO.sub.2 absorber material within the system is minimized. The use of an overflow tube as described, to preferentially exhaust alveolar gases is applicable to both circle and single tube anesthesia rebreathing systems. The reservoir can be squeezed to assist the patient' s breathing, either manually by the attending anesthetist or mechanically by a machine commonly known as a ventilator. For optimum performance, the pop-off valve is operable in two different modes, i.e. (1) as a manually controlled variable orifice and (2) as an automatically controlled valve responding to a positive control pressure. The source of control pressure is selectable by the attending anesthetist dependent on the type of ventilation being employed, i.e. spontaneous, manually assisted, or mechanically controlled. In order to isolate the ventilator from the patient's gas, the reservoir preferably comprises a container formed by a flexible outer wall containing a flexible septum therein defining two isolated chambers. The ventilator communicates with one chamber and the other chamber communicates with the anesthesia system tubing. As the ventilator pressurizes the first chamber, the flexible septum between the chambers transmits the pressure to the other chamber and thereby to the patient's airway.

摘要: A mouthpiece comprises a breath-receiving cup member mounted on a hollow stem member which provides an outlet of the mouthpiece and which is adapted for connection to the inlet of a breath testing device. The stem member has an inlet portion extending inwardly of the cup member and having a closed end directly opposed to the mouth of the subject to be tested when the mouthpiece is in use. Adjacent to the closed end are apertures communicating with the outlet by way of a passage formed in the stem member. The cup member and the inlet portion of the stem member are so dimensioned that the closed end, and thus the apertures, are spaced from both the mouth of the subject and surrounding portions of the cup member.

摘要: A respirator comprise a breathing tube, such as an endotracheal tube, having a proximal end, a distal end, and a lumen extending between the proximal and distal end. The lumen defines at least a portion of the respirator circuit. A ventilator tube is in fluid communication with the proximal end of the breathing tube end and defines a portion of the respirator circuit. One or more light sources capable of emitting ultraviolet radiation irradiates at least a portion of the respirator circuit, thereby sterilizing the respiratory circuit.

摘要: A sleeved filter apparatus prevents germs from becoming resident on both the interior and exterior of a breathing device. The sleeved filter apparatus includes a filter member and a sleeve member. The filter member is composed of a first and second enclosure half which are sealed on their interior ends. The external ends of the two enclosure halves have connectors for connecting the sleeved filter apparatus to a breathing device and/or a patient airway component. A filter element is disposed inside the filter member enclosure for preventing gases from flowing between the first connector and the second connector of the filter member without passing through the filter element. This filter member prevents germs from passing between the patient and the interior of the breathing device. The sleeve member is made of a flexible material, and has a first open end, a second open end, and a middle portion extending between the first open end and the second open end. The first open end of the sleeve member is sealingly engaged to the filter member. The sleeve member has a diameter sized to surround the breathing circuit, and a length sufficient to extend along most or all of the entire length of the breathing circuit. The sleeve member prevents germs and bacteria from passing between the patient and the exterior of the breathing device. The sleeved filter apparatus is removable between procedures to permit reuse of the breathing circuit without substantial cross-contamination between patients.
