摘要: A fiber optics level sensor (FOLS) or flow sensor (FOFS) system for use in hazardous environments, process control, and industrial and environmental control applications. The system includes a pair of fiber optic bundles arranged between a remote sensor and a control module. The remote sensor detects the position of a movable vane--which is mechanically coupled to a float in the sensed environment--by means of a transmission gap between confronting ends of the pair of fiber optic bundles. The control module includes a light output device driven by an oscillator which thereby generates pulses of light which are optically coupled to the end of one of the bundles. The end of the other bundle is coupled to a photodetector which generates electrical pulses in response to the returning light pulses. The electrical pulses are amplified and then gated through a sampling circuit which is internally synchronized by means of and in resonse to the oscillator. The gated electrical pulses are then coupled to a staircase generator the output of which is coupled to a comparator. When the output of the staircase generator falls below a predetermined level the output of the comparator changes state to provide an indication that the vane has interrupted the light path in the gap. The output of the comparator controls a relay which is coupled to an external utilization device such as an alarm or a valve control.

摘要: A fibre optic sensor, particularly for ascertaining fluid levels, utilizes at least two optical fibres having at least a portion thereof embedded in a transparent substrate material of similar refractive index. One of the fibres is coupled to a light source, the other to a light detector. The fibres are oriented in a plane relative to the interface between substrate and fluid so that light exiting the source fibre is coupled to the detector fibre when total internal reflection at the interface occurs in the presence of a first fluid. In the presence of a second fluid of higher refractive index than the first fluid there will be no coupling. Several different embodiments, to achieve discrete or continuous level sensing or the sensing of other parameters are disclosed.

摘要: Method and apparatus for determining physical characteristics of an object, such as its location, utilizing a non-coherent fiber optic bundle. In one embodiment, a non-coherent fiber optic bundle containing up to 30% randomly non-aligned fibers is utilized and an object is imaged onto one end of the bundle and the image is transferred from the other end of the bundle to a photodetector comprising a plurality of discrete photodetector elements. The area of the lighted or unlighted portion at the other end of the bundle is utilized to determine the physical characteristics of the object.

摘要: A liquid supplying device comprising a liquid container for storing a liquid so as to supply an external device and a liquid level sensor for detecting the liquid level. As the liquid within the liquid container is gradually used up, liquid level drops. As soon as the remaining liquid in the container drops to a predetermined amount, the liquid level sensor emits a warning signal to the operator, and the operator can then replenish the liquid in the container.

摘要: The control apparatus controls the lowering motion of an aspirator tube into a sample vessel in an automatic sample dispenser in a manner such that the smallest possible portion of an external surface of the aspirator tube is wetted by a liquid present in the sample vessel. A servo drive lowers the aspirator tube into the sample vessel. A sensor arrangement containing a single light guide, a light transmitter and a photoelectric receiver is associated with the aspirator tube and responds to light reflections at the liquid surface upon immersion of the lower aspirator tube end into the liquid. The light guide guides the propagating light beam and a returning reflected light beam. An electronic control controls the advancement of the aspirator tube via the servo drive into a position in which a predetermined short length in the region of the lower aspirator tube end dips into the liquid. When the liquid level drops due to aspiration of liquid into the aspirator tube, the lower end of the latter follows just this drop of the liquid level so that the aspirator tube continuously remains immersed into the liquid but only with the short length at its lower end.

摘要: A specific gravity sensor that is disposed in a liquid, the sensor including at least one pair of vertically extending, light-transmitting elements, one of the elements of the pair having a light-emitting portion submerged in the liquid, which portion is spaced from a confronting light-receiving portion of the other element. Each element has a portion that extends above the liquid and one of those latter portions is subjected to light. A light-flow inhibitor is guided vertically to move upwardly and downwardly between those submerged portions of those elements depending upon the variations in the specific gravity of the liquid and the inhibitor thereby functions to permit and prevent, respectively, the transmission of light therebetween. The sensor can be employed in a system for controlling mechanism by picking up light rays that emanate from the light-receiving light-transmitting element.

摘要: An optical fuel level sensor for providing an electronic signal representative of the fuel level within a fuel tank, generally comprising a waveguide body, a photo source, and a photo receiver. The waveguide body can either be of a dual-tapered or single-taper shape and includes numerous tiered facets, which are angled surfaces located on the outer periphery of the waveguide. When the fuel level within the fuel tank is above a particular tiered facet, light that impinges that facet will refract out of the waveguide, conversely, when the fuel level is below that facet, impinging light will be reflected back into the waveguide such that it is received by the photo receiver. In this manner, the fuel level sensor is able to utilize the reflected light received by the photo receiver to provide an electronic signal representative of the fuel level. Furthermore, a calibration feature may be included which provides calibration information indicating when the fuel level has reached a known, predetermined level.
