摘要:
An interlocking nut and washer system exhibits a very high degree of inherent mechanical stability. The preferred embodiment includes an inner washer, an adjustment nut, an intermediate washer, and an outer nut completing an interlock assembly. Although the inner washer is technically optional, use thereof does reduce wear on the inner nut. While the invention maybe applied in different ways, the system is particularly suited to the controlled adjustment of tapered roller wheel bearings. In this case the system is provided on the spindle ends of an axle, which mounts a wheel assembly that includes tapered roller bearings.

A retainer for preventing rotation of a spindle nut relative to a wheel spindle. The retainer engages a key way of the spindle and a groove of the spindle nut to prevent rotation of the spindle nut relative to the spindle. The retainer has a semi-circular body that surrounds the end of the spindle. The retainer has a radially inward projecting tab and an axially extending leg from the tab that engages the key way. The leg in addition to engaging the key way engages the groove of the spindle nut. The spindle nut preferably includes a recess in which the body portion of the retainer is nested.

A device for locking a threaded insert into a prepared hole in a parent material. The device includes a locating portion, a locking portion and a gripping portion which is removed upon installation. The locating portion comprises a finger which is positioned in a preformed slot in the external threads of the threaded insert. The locking portion, which extends outwardly from the locating portion, is driven across the corresponding threads of the parent material to shear and distort the threads and lock the insert in place. The gripping portion which extends outwardly from the locking portion is used by the installer to position the device during installation and is then broken off.

A coupling device for coupling together heavy cargo pipes or the like which includes releasable plunger locking means to prevent rotation of a cam element in a locked condition and permit rotation in an unlocked condition. A liquid exit is also provided to prevent liquid accumulation and freezing together of relatively movable locking parts.

There are disclosed nut locking assemblies comprising a washer adapted to slide over a spindle and be keyed to it, and a lock-ring to the rear of the washer and secured to the washer against relative rotation. The nut abuts the washer. The lock-ring is slidable axially so that in a forward position it is disengaged from the nut but in a rearward position serrations on the lock-ring engage corresponding serrations on the nut to lock the nut against rotation. An annular space between the washer and the lock-ring contains a resilient ring which can be strained to alter its diameter. In its normal unstrained condition this ring holds the lock-ring in its locking position. When it is desired to move the lock-ring to its unlocked position it is pushed forward to disengage the serrations of the lock-ring from those of the nut. This strains the resilient ring to a different diameter so that when the pressure is removed from the resilient ring it resumes its original unstrained diameter to push the lock-ring back into engagement with the nut, thereby locking it against rotation.

There is disclosed an assembly of a washer having a recess between its hub and periphery, having a base with side portions converging toward the base, and a nut positioned against the washer and mounted over a spindle. Within the recess there is an annular ring member and between the ring member and the base of the recess there is a resilient expandable and contractable ring having juxtaposed ends which normally abut each other, but are adapted to be stretched apart when pressure is applied to the ring member in the direction of pushing the resilient ring along a converging side of the recess to the base. The nut is provided with a plurality of serrations extending radially outward and the hub of the washer is provided with similar serrations also extending radially outward, the serrations of the washer and of the nut being adapted to engage serrations on the annular ring member which are radially inwardly directed. The washer has a tongue adapted to engage within a groove at the surface of the spindle to prevent rotation of the washer. When the resilient ring is in its unstrained condition it holds the annular ring member so that its serrations engage the serrations of both the washer and the nut, thereby preventing the nut from turning on the spindle. By application of a tool which applies pressure against the annular ring member toward the base of the recess the resilient ring is pushed toward the base thereby expanding the ring and resiliently straining it. With the ring member in this position its serrations are disengaged from those of the nut while remaining engaged with those of the washer and under this condition the nut can be turned on the spindle. Release of the pressure on the annular ring member enables the resilient ring to move away from the base of the recess to push and hold the annular ring member with its serrations in engagement with those of the nut as well as with those of the washer, to lock the nut on the spindle.
