Abstract:
The present invention is directed to a gelastic cushion. The gelastic cushion is made from a conventional gelastic composition. The gelastic cushion has a structure having a first wall that defines an opening area and buckles when a force is applied to the first wall. When the first wall buckles a predetermined amount, a second wall, interconnected to the first wall, also buckles. The second wall decreases the chance that the first wall bottoms out. Bottoming out increases the pressure on the patient (a.k.a., the force) overlying the gelastic cushion. That increased pressure is undesirable.
Abstract:
A baseless cushion includes a pad with a layer of stable elastomeric block polymer gel with a pad having an opposite top and bottom surfaces, opposite longitudinally extending sides and opposite longitudinally spaced ends. A frame is provided for supporting the pad only along the, spaced ends or sides thereof.
Abstract:
A method for manufacturing a gelatinous elastomer article comprising a series of steps. The steps include selecting a plasticizer, selecting a triblock copolymer of the general configuration A-B-A, mixing the plasticizer and triblock copolymer such as by melt blending or use of a compounding screw in order to produce a gelatinous elastomer, permitting the gelatinous elastomer to cool, selecting a forming device such as a die or mold, melting the gelatinous elastorner, and forcing the gelatinous elastomer into the forming device in order to form a gelatinous elastomer part.

A surface pad system for a surgical table includes a cover defining an interior region and including an upwardly-facing top surface configured to be positioned beneath a patient. The surface pad system also includes a pad core received in the interior region of the cover to support the patient.
Abstract:
A surface pad system for a surgical table includes a cover having an upwardly-facing patient-support surface defining an interior region of the surface pad system, and a vacuum bead bag received in the interior region. The vacuum bead bag includes a flexible cover defining an interior region containing compressible beads including a lower layer of compressible beads and an upper layer of compressible bead separated from the lower layer of compressible beads by a membrane made from a flexible material. The system also includes a bladder received in the interior region of the cover and positioned to lie beneath the vacuum bead bag. The bladder defines an interior region and is inflatable when pressurized fluid is received in the interior region of the bladder so that the vacuum bead bag conformingly engages the patient on the patient-support surface when the bladder is inflated.
Abstract:
A pressure relief support system utilizes a self-adjusting approach to maintaining generally constant pressure in fluid support bladders. A constant force, such as from a constant force linear spring or from a counterweight system, is applied directly to a fluid support bladder or to a reservoir in fluid communication with such bladder. Plural self-adjusting arrangements may be provided in a single device for fabricating a support body with sectionalized support. Such arrangements may be incorporated into mattress support systems or into seating arrangements or other alternative uses. By appropriately selecting system components, such as the amount of the constant force applied, the original volume of fluid to which the force is applied, and the reservoir size, pressure dispersion for a patient or supported object of any type may be controlled at a predetermined generally constant point. By utilizing the potential energy of a constant force linear spring or equivalent arrangement, a self-adjusting system and methodology is provided which does not require any form of electronic control system for receiving sensory feedback or for operating pressure pumps or valving systems responsive to any such feedback.
Abstract:
A method for assembling a seating system by providing a base member and pad filled with fluid. The pad has a front, rear, and sides with the sides flaring outwardly of each other and of a center axis. The pad further includes an arcuate, transverse seal extending substantially from side to side across the pad and opening to face toward the front of the pad. In the method, the pad is gathered into pleats by bringing the sides toward each other until the arcuate seal assumes a substantially straight line and then positioned in its gathered state over the base member.
Abstract:
Novel gelatinous compositions and articles are formed from an intimate melt blend admixture of poly(styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene) triblock copolymer and high levels of a plasticizing oil.The gelatinous composition is transparent and have a novel combination of properties including unexpectedly high elongation and tensile strength and excellent shape retention after extreme deformation under high-velocity impact and stress conditions. The gelatinous products of this invention are soft, flexible, and have elastic memory, characterized by a gel rigidity of from about 20 gram to about 700 gram Bloom. These and other properties are particularly essential for the gelatinous composition to have utility as toys, therapeutic hand exercising grips, shock absorbers, acoustical isolators, components for cushions, and other uses.
