The armature winding consists of active portions of turns formed as plates up to one third of the pole pitch of the armature winding in width, and end portions formed in two layers and made as rectangular plates mounted parallel to the track axis. The end portions of the three-phase armature winding are used as reactive buses or conveyors of transverse stabilization. At least one layer of the end portions is mounted parallel to the planes of the field coils of transverse stabilization.

A propulsion arrangement for a body movable along a track defining a direction of motion is disclosed. The arrangement includes a winding carrier assembly which coacts with a ferromagnetic return to develop a propulsion force for moving the body. The carrier assembly has two stacks of laminations carrying windings for developing a travelling wave; these windings are displaced with respect to each other by one pole pitch. The ferromagnetic return includes bars arranged transversely to the direction of motion. The arrangement of the bars constitutes a substantial simplification of the magnetic return and enables a simplified track switch layout to be obtained.

A rapid transit system in which a vehicle, typically consisting of a train of detachably coupled cars, is suspended in a vacuum tunnel with at least two sloping reaches from a ferromagnetic monorail of high resistivity by magnetic attraction and propelled by gravity. Servo-controlled electromagnets allow the vehicle to be suspended from the rail without actually being in contact with it or any other part of the tunnel. Propulsion by gravity from one station to the next is accomplished by allowing the vehicle to coast frictionlessly down one sloping reach of the tunnel during which time it is automatically accelerated, leveling off at the horizontal reach at some cruising depth where it coasts along at an essentially constant maximum speed, and then moving up the next sloping reach toward the second station during which time it is automatically decelerated, and finally stopping at the station where the original elevation is reached. When moving from one station to another station at a lower elevation, the excess kinetic energy is recovered by regenerative braking and stored in flywheel alternator-motor energy storage units to be used later in electric motors that enable the vehicle to move from one station to another station at a higher elevation, eventually returning to the original elevation.

Disclosure is made of a traction means with electrodynamic suspension of aehicle, intended for high-speed land transport and comprising a synchronous linear motor whose exciting winding is mounted on the vehicle and at the same time serves as the exciting winding for electrodynamic suspension of the vehicle, whereas the three-phase armature winding of said synchronous linear motor extends horizontally along the track and is a single-layer winding with one turn for the pole and phase. In the active area, the conductors of the armature winding are made as strips parallel to the track plane and having a width up to one third of the pole pitch. The exciting winding induces eddy currents in said strips on the side of the vehicle, which eddy currents ensure electrodynamic suspension of the vehicle. Traction means of this type can be used in the future in high-speed urban and suburban transport.
