A force limiting workpiece holding device for holding a workpiece in a workpiece processing assembly having a spindle and a closer that applies a force, comprises a workpiece holder slidably mounted to the spindle. The workpiece holder includes a plurality of circumferentially-spaced gripping segments that are movable between expanded and contracted positions to grip and release a workpiece. A force limiting coupling structure includes a biasing structure having a spring force. The coupling structure is operatively mountable between the workpiece holder and the closer such that a force applied by the closer to move the gripping segments of the workpiece holder between the expanded and contracted positions is transferred to the workpiece holder through the coupling structure and the biasing structure thereof, whereby a resultant force being applied to the workpiece holder by the closer is limited to the spring force of the biasing structure.

A collet chuck includes a tubular body and a rotating shaft assembly that is journalled within the tubular body and that defines a frustoconical recess therewithin. A belt pulley is sleeved fixedly on the rotating shaft assembly. A collet is disposed operably within the recess in the rotating shaft assembly, and is adapted to hold a rod-shaped workpiece therewithin. A movable member is mounted axially and movably within the tubular body for movement in tightening and loosening directions. A front oil chamber is formed in the tubular body, and is located immediately in front of the movable member. A rear oil chamber is formed in the tubular body, and is located immediately behind the movable member. A first oil passage is formed in the tubular body and is in fluid communication with the front oil chamber so that hydraulic oil can be fed thereinto, thereby moving the movable member within the tubular body in the tightening direction so as to compress the collet. A second oil passage is formed in the tubular body and is in fluid communication with the rear oil chamber so that hydraulic oil can be fed to thereinto, thereby moving the movable member within the tubular body in the loosening direction so as to release the collet.

A hand-held, chuck-type part holder provides holding means for a machine part. The hand-held part holder may be secondary holding means for a part which itself is then inserted into a primary machine clamp. The chuck uses standard replaceable collets which may be easily interchanged for different size parts. The collet is actuated by a rod which is moved in turn by an air cylinder which is supported by a handle. The part-gripping collet may be actuated by a tilt switch which provides the automatic clamping action of the collet as the operator turns the holder to the vertical position before inserting or removing a part from the end of the collet. Additionally, a fixture mounted to the bed of the processing machine may be used which guides the part holder into alignment with the primary clamp as it is inserted. The fixture includes pivot and slide means which both support and direct the movement of the part holder.

A hydraulic chuck device for testing the integrity of a ferrule sealed to a tube proximate one end of the tube. The device includes a chuck body having an inlet end with an internal collet engaging surface and a second end. Collets are mounted inside the inlet end of the body. The collet has faces shaped to conform to a ferrule on a tube, and normally urges the collets against the engaging surface of the body. An actuator is connected to a source of fluid, and is mounted in the body. The actuator includes a ferrule seal which is normally in a ferrule engaging position for introducing the fluid to the tube. A handle is provided for inserting a ferrule and tube into the device to allow the collets to engage the ferrule on one side of its seal to the tube and the ferrule seal to engage the ferrule on the other side of its seal to the tube when fluid is introduced into the tube.

A multiple collet work-piece holder having a block with a plurality of openings and a collet retainer disposed within the openings. The retainer has pistons which are subjected to hydraulic pressure for moving the collet to a clamping position. The opposite ends of the collet are completely free from any obstructions, so the work-piece can be inserted from either end, and the collet is securely held against rotation so that the work-piece can be machined as desired. Also, an automatic release of the collet is provided, so that the work-piece can be released when fluid pressure is relieved.
