The cavity and key may have corresponding triangular shapes. The post may have an internally threaded portion. The cavity may have a slot oriented along a wheel radius sized to receive the key, and the orifice open in the slot.

    摘要: An improved vehicle wheel cover retention system and method for producing the same includes a wheel cover (16) secured to a vehicle wheel. The method for producing the vehicle wheel (10) includes the steps of: (a) providing a vehicle wheel including a disc (14) defining an outboard facing wheel surface and including an outboard tire bead seat retaining flange (20), the outboard bead seat retaining flange including an outer peripheral end having an annular groove (64) formed therein; (b) providing a wheel cover defining an inner cover surface and an outer cover surface, the wheel cover including an outer end (70); (c) applying a sealant (82) to one of the outboard facing wheel surface and the inner cover surface; (d) supporting the wheel and the cover in coaxial relationship relative to one another; (e) selectively moving the wheel and the cover toward one another to enable the sealant to initially secure the wheel and the cover together; (f) providing a metal deforming tool (100) having a tool end, the tool end having a leading end (102A) and a trailing end (102B), the leading end defining a first tool profile and the trailing end defining a second tool profile which is different from the first tool profile; and (g) selectively operating the metal deforming tool to cause the leading end of the tool to initially engage and deform the outer end of the wheel cover followed by the trailing end of the tool engaging the deforming the outer end of the wheel cover into the groove in a permanent mechanical lock connection therewith whereby the wheel cover covers at least a portion of the outboard facing wheel surface and the entire portion of the outer peripheral end of the outboard bead seat retaining flange (34).

    摘要: A wheel applique is secured to a wheel using a method that changes the dimensions of one or both elements during an abutment phase of the method. The method includes the heating of the wheel so that a diameter defined by a rim flange protrusion grows thus providing clearance for the wheel applique to pass by it. Once the wheel applique has passed by the rim flange protrusion, the wheel is cooled to ambient temperature eliminating the clearance and resulting in the wheel applique being locked against the wheel due to the positive engagement of the periphery of the wheel applique and the rim flange protrusion of the wheel.

    摘要: A wheel cover simulating a machined cast wheel is constructed by stamping a blank from sheet metal. Windows spaced angularly about the cover defined by radially inwardly angled borders simulating depth are formed on the blank. A marginal circular periphery is formed into a peripheral flange. The front face of the wheel cover is machined on a numerically controlled lathe, such that the cutting tool closely follows the contour, to form fine spiral grooves simulating machine markings generally concentric about the center of the wheel, thereby exhibiting a machined finish. A retainer ring is mounted interiorly within the flange and the flange rolled thereover to complete the assembly. This configuration provides a relatively inexpensive decorative wheel cover simulating a machined wheel.

    摘要: A trim ring comprises an annulus of metal which is affixed to the rim of an automobile wheel to provide a decorative cover for the wheel rim. Disclosed is a trim ring formed into a collar having the general shape of a pie pan from which the base section or hub is removed. The base section is blanked and drawn to form a number of individual retaining clips. Each clip has a wheel rim engaging retention tab extending therefrom such that when the clips are angularly spaced along the outer periphery of the collar and clinched thereto, the tabs describe a series of retaining members spaced along the collar and coaxial thereto. The tabs have protruding teeth for grippingly engaging the rim of the wheel to secure the trim ring to the wheel rim.Disclosed also is the method of originally forming the pie pan shape of the collar, blanking and forming the base section to fabricate retaining clips from the blanked circular sheet and affixing the clips to the collar to produce the wheel gripping members.
