Certain novel formulations of turf additives that act in such a manner as to permit proper amounts of moisture to contact root systems in order to reduce dry spots within highly managed turf areas and/or lawns. It is theorized that the accumulation of humic acid (and other natural byproduct deleterious compounds) at the topsoil surface in most cultivated grassy areas including sandy soils (such as, in particular, golf greens), results in the production of an effective organic waxy coating on the soil components. Such a coating is hydrophobic in nature and thus dries out the soil itself. The inventive formulation thus permits removal of such accumulated humic acid (and other compounds) from the topsoil to the level necessary to provide effective moisture penetration for sustained grass growth therein (hereinafter referred to as “redistributes”). Methods of providing such beneficial removal of humic substances from target sandy soils are also contemplated within this invention, as well as specific test hydrophobic sand formulations.

A process of phytoremediation is provided in which the above-ground surface is first amended with stabilizing additives which will react with and bind subsurface contaminants. As the contaminants are brought to the surface through the growth of phytoextracting plants, the plants' vegetation is left to die in situ. As the plant biomass decomposes, the soil contaminants brought to the surface react with and/or are bound by the soil amendments. The soil amendments may further be provided in the form of a geotextile barrier or mat having one or more additive layers present within the mat structure.

A stabilized natural turf surface particularly suitable for athletic fields includes a mat interposed between upper and lower layers of growth media, the mat having a woven biodegradable backing and upwardly extending artificial fibers secured thereto, wherein the fibers extend well above the top of the upper layer. Natural grass plants grow in the upper layer, with the crowns being located in the upper layer of growth media and the roots extending down through the backing and into the lower layer. The mat helps to stabilize root growth, particularly during the first few years. The biodegradability of the backing results in its eventual decomposition, so that after a predetermined time the turf surface may be aerated all the way down to the lower layer without adversely affecting the mat and the mat can be top dressed beginning immediately after turf growth occurs. The biodegradability also prevents the creation of an agronomic barrier between the upper and lower layers.

Application of a water-soluble salt of chitosan to the foliage of growing plants increases the yield of vegetables, tubers, cereal grains, fruits and blossoms. Plants so treated are healthier, sturdier, more resistant to drought and many varieties enjoy an extended period of production. The plants may be effectively and conveniently treated by spraying the foliage with a solution containing 0.01-1.5% wt. chitosan salt using conventional agricultural equipment and techniques.

A method and apparatus for obtaining optimal cultivation of a parcel of land. A soil working machine with drivable working members, such as a rotary harrow, is provided with soil working members which rotate about approximately vertically orientated axes, and cooperates with a geographic positioning system such as DGPS, GPS, Lorean or a dead reckoning system to determine on a continual basis the actual position of the soil working machine on a parcel of land. Simultaneously, the condition or the composition or both of the underlying soil is determined and data of same is transmitted to a processing unit which maps the parcel of land into subareas wherein the states of the soil are the same. A control unit applies this mapping for controlling the soil working members during the soil working machine's operations so that each subarea of the same soil state is optimally cultivated. Variations in the cultivation are obtained by controlling the soil working members' rpm's or their working depths or both and also, optionally independently or in combination with other variations, controlling the soil working machine's speed as it transverses different subareas to optimize cultivation in each subarea. These variations in cultivation can occur during the mapping process or subsequently the mapping can be used for further cultivation operations of the same parcel of land.
