An inbred squash line, designated 833, is disclosed. The invention relates to the seeds of inbred squash line 833, to the plants of inbred squash line 833 and to methods for producing a squash plant, either inbred or hybrid, by crossing the inbred line 833 with itself or another squash line. The invention further relates to methods for producing a squash plant containing in its genetic material one or more transgenes and to the transgenic plants produced by that method and to methods for producing other inbred squash lines derived from the inbred 833.

The present invention provides polynucleotides and related polypeptides of the enzyme APAO isolated from Exophiala spinifera and Rhinocladiella airovirens. The polynucleotides may be mutated to remove glycosylation sites and cysteine residues. Additionally, the present invention provides recombinant expression cassettes, host cells, transgenic plants, and transgenic seed. The present invention also provides for polynucleotides containing both APAO and a fumonisin esterase. In addition, the present invention provides methods for producing the APAO enzyme in both prokaryotic and eukaryotic systems, methods for detecting fumonisins, and methods for identifying transformed plant cells. Methods for degrading fungal toxins in plants, grain, grain processing, silage, food crops and in animal feed are also disclosed.

The methods and compositions of the present invention find use in impacting microbial pathogens and in enhancing disease resistance to pathogens, particularly by plants. The compositions of the invention include nucleic acid molecules encoding Fus6 polypeptides derived from Agrotis ipsilon that possess antimicrobial properties, particularly fungicidal properties. Further provided are plant cells plants, and seed thereof, transformed with the nucleic acid molecules of the invention so as to confer disease resistance on the plant.
