Abstract: The present invention provides a zirconia pre-sintered body having suitable shades, translucency, and strength. The present invention relates to a zirconia pre-sintered body comprising a layered structure of at least three layers containing zirconia and a stabilizer capable of preventing a phase transformation of zirconia, the layered structure including at least two layers that differ from one another in the content of the stabilizer relative to the total mole of the zirconia and the stabilizer, the layered structure including at least two layers having substantially the same stabilizer content relative to the total mole of the zirconia and the stabilizer, the zirconia pre-sintered body containing a coloring component in all of the layers having substantially the same stabilizer content, and the layers having substantially the same stabilizer content differing from one another in the composition of the coloring component.

Abstract: A method for making a ceramic body comprised of a ceramic material having an inhibitory effect on bacterial growth is provided. A dental prosthesis may be made of a ceramic material that comprises a molybdenum-containing component on a portion of the prosthesis that contacts the gingival surface of a patient. In one method, a porous zirconia ceramic structure is shaped in the form of a dental prosthesis, and then infiltrated with a molybdenum-containing composition, before sintering to densify the ceramic structure.

Abstract: The invention relates to a process of producing a dental zirconia restoration, the dental zirconia restoration having an outer and an inner surface, the process comprising the step of firing a porous dental zirconia restoration and a glass until the porous dental zirconia restoration is sintered, the glass being located during the firing step on at least a portion of the outer surface of the porous dental zirconia restoration, wherein the zirconia material of the porous dental zirconia restoration and the glass are selected such that during the firing step the glass infiltrates the pores of the porous dental zirconia restoration to an extent of not more than 5 μm in depth. The invention also relates to a sintered dental zirconia restoration obtainable by such a process and a kit of parts comprising a porous dental zirconia mill blank and a surface treating agent containing a glass for use in such a process.

Abstract: A method for enhancing optical properties of sintered, zirconia ceramic bodies and zirconia ceramic dental restorations is provided. The porous or pre-sintered stage of a ceramic body is treated with two different yttrium-containing compositions and sintered, resulting in sintered ceramic bodies having enhanced optical properties. The enhanced optical properties may be substantially permanent, remaining for the useful life of the sintered ceramic body.

Abstract: A method for enhancing mechanical properties of sintered, zirconia ceramic bodies and zirconia ceramic dental restorations is provided. A porous or pre-sintered stage of a ceramic body may be treated with a tantalum-containing composition prior to sintering. Alternatively, zirconia ceramic powder may be coated with a tantalum-containing composition prior to forming a shaped ceramic body. After sintering, the resulting ceramic bodies have enhanced mechanical properties, such as greater fracture toughness, without a significant decrease in optical properties.
