Rapid and complete floatation of oily material containing heavy contaminants is achieved by the addition of aeration bubbles 62 within the first compartment 32.

The present invention relates to an apparatus for continuously separating a fluid mixture, for example, oil, water, as well as also slurry, and for continuous separate discharge of the fluids and harmless removal of the solid portion.The invention is based on the principle that the fluid mixture is conducted in the vertical direction in such a manner, that by the downward flow, flow free zones develop on the opposing sides of deflectors, in which the low viscosity fluid (oil) rises and forms a specified height oil column in the collecting chamber.The oil column so appears, as a result of a turbulence effect of the separator, to the water surface, that with a density of 0.85, 15% of the oil column floats above the water surface and 85% sinks under the water surface.These 15%'s are used for the continuous draining without the water flowing off with it. The oil outlet lies, for example, only 1 cm above the highest possible water level, the oil column under the water surface amounts to 5.6 cm before the oil discharge.Through the arrangement of a submerged second water surface independent from the water surface fluctuations this spacing is considerably increased.With obstructions in the oil discharge (filled tank, blocked pipe, etc.) the oil level in the oil collection chamber sinks and flows through the immersion pipe of the oil safety discharge in a reserve tank; through this the oil alarm is tripped.

In order to achieve improved collection of sludge in a settling basin, without employing moving parts, a collecting trough is provided, this trough being open at the top and bounded on the sides by horizontal overflow-weirs and being intended to rest on the bottom of the basin. A line, located level with the bottom of the collecting trough, issues from the trough and runs to a suction pump. The trough is covered by a hood which widens towards the bottom and leaves an unobstructed interspace between itself and the overflow-weirs, this hood possessing openings which lie at a lower level than the overflow-weirs.

Apparatus is disclosed for separating sludge, oil and the like from contaminated water having walls separating a tank into first and second compartments. The tank has an inlet for carrying the contaminated water thereto, a first outlet for removing separated oil and the like, a second outlet for removing the treated water and an outlet for removing separated sludge and the like. A plate pack is mounted on an inclined wall within the tank with the pack sloping downwardly from a first to a second end. The improved pack includes side walls, a top and a bottom forming a conduit for carrying the contaminated water from the first to the second end. A plurality of plates is mounted one above the other extending between the side walls to provide a plurality of passageways. The plate pack second end defines a substantially vertical plane when the pack is mounted on the inclined wall. The contaminated water passes from the first to the second compartment by flowing down through the passageways and the oil separates from the water during such passage to rise and flow out the first end and the sludge separates from the water to settle and flow out the second end.

This accumulated water is filtered and treated and thereafter used for the operation of water closets of toilets, the storage reservoir providing for the gravitational separation of solids from the water which are periodically flushed from the reservoir into the sewer. The pumping action which delivers the accumulated water to the water closets of toilets may be hydraulically operated by a portion of the water drained to the storage reservoir.

Various improvements in a clarifier having inclined flow passages, the clarifier being capable of reversible operation wherein liquid to be clarified may be selectively caused to flow either upwardly or downwardly through the flow passages. The clarifier has channels adjacent the tops of the flow passages for collecting a relatively low density phase and a unique flow control trough simultaneously regulating liquid flow through a manifold above the flow passages while also forming an outlet passage for the low density phase. A vertical flow manifold with an overflow arrangement regulates flow between the lower ends of the flow passages and a flow conduit external of the clarifer. Means at either end of the flow channels may collect multiple phases, an intermediate phase preferably being recycled to improve either the rate or quality of clarification. Finally, the clarifier includes a combined support structure and flocculating chamber as well as a seal arrangement for facilitating mounting of the inclined plates within the housing. The clarifier is operable in a downflow mode with one or more low density phases being removed at the top of the inclined passages.

The invention is an apparatus and method for separating solid particles from a liquid, including both light particles which tend to flow on or close to the surface of the liquid and heavy particles which tend to sink to the bottom of the liquid. The apparatus includes: a separation tank, an inlet means, a weir, a heavy particle outlet means, and a substantially clear liquid outlet means. The method includes: flowing the liquid containing suspended solid particles into the separation tank; adjusting the flow rate to said tank to allow a residence time for the liquid in the separation tank sufficient for the light particles to float toward the surface of the liquid and for the heavy particles to sink toward the bottom of the liquid in the separation tank; passing the light particles at or near the surface of the liquid across the weir; allowing the heavy particles in the liquid to settle to the bottom, removing heavy particles from the bottom of the separation tank; and removing substantially clear liquid from an intermediate elevation of the liquid in the separator tank. In a preferred embodiment, the invention is used in conjunction with the operation of a coke oven battery to recover fine coal particles and agglomerates in a flushing liquor leaving a charging main so that such recovered fine coal particles and agglomerates may be recycled through a coke oven for conversion into coke; and to recover substantially clear flushing liquor for reuse.
