    摘要: A bearing system, for joint or hinge point bearings, employing a spherical bearing wherein the ball member is provided with oppositely disposed flat side walls and the bearing race therefore is formed with a longitudinal slot whereby the ball member can be inserted into the race. A sleeve, which is secured to a supporting or operating member during installation, is provided about the race and the sleeve and race are formed with mating splines which enable the spherical bearing assembly to reciprocatably move relative to the sleeve.Suitable lubricating channels are provided, and sealing rings are installed at the outer margins of the bearing ball and race members to retain the lubricant in place and to prevent the ingress of foreign material.

    摘要: A motion transmitting mechanism, for use as a sample manipulating device or wobble stick, is provided for transmitting manual movements through the wall of a vacuum vessel. The mechanism includes a central mounting flange for securing the mechanism in vacuum sealing arrangement with the vacuum vessel through a suitable orifice formed in the wall thereof. A spherical ball joint is moveably journalled within the mounting flange to enable the mechanism to be moved angularly relative to an axis perpendicular to the vacuum vessel wall throughout a predetermined range of limited angular displacement. A coaxial shaft assembly comprises an outer tube and a central shaft, the assembly being axially slideable through a central opening of the ball joint means to provide axial movements within the vacuum vessel throughout a predetermined range of limited axial displacement. A rotation imparting structure is connected to the coaxial shaft assembly for imparting unrestricted rotational movement to the central shaft relative to the outer tube. Extensible vacuum sealing baffles extend from the flange on the vacuum side of the mechanism and are connected to the rotation mechanism. The sealing baffles are provided for vacuum sealing of the interior of the coaxial shaft assembly. Axial displacement of the central shaft relative to the outer tube provides control for pincers which may be installed at the inner end of the mechanism.

    摘要: A sealed joint having two adjacent, axially aligned sleeves separated by a rotating seal, one joint being movable with respect to the other. The joints contain a tubular passageway surrounded by a motor and a harmonic drive. A tachometer and a brake help to control the motor and a position encoder measures rotational motion between the sleeves. All components are mounted in sealed relation with respect to the outside of the sleeves. A sealable port communicates with the interior of the tubular passageway for each sleeve so that control cables and fluid conduits may pass into the joint through one port, along the tubular passageway and out of the other port.

    摘要: This disclosure is directed to a simple manipulator which permits handling of, and performance of work on, small objects within a vacuum chamber. In one embodiment, it is provided with pincers or tweezers having normally open tines which are closed on an object by a movable rod that extends into the vacuum chamber through a vacuumtight opening. Two flexible metal bellows are employed in the vacuum seal: the smaller one allows rod motion to open and close the pincers; the larger bellows allows axial and lateral translational motion of the pincers and the object being held. The device is provided with springs along the outer surface of the larger bellows to prevent atmospheric pressure from expanding the bellows to its maximum length. Therefore, operation of the manipulator from the outside permits handling of objects within the evacuated chamber.
