摘要： According to the present invention there is provided a method of treating timber with a creosote-containing preservative formulation adapted for use at substantially ambient temperature. The formulation comprises: creosote; one or more surfactants such that when diluted with a predetermined quantity of water, the creosote is present as an oil-in-water macroemulsion or microemulsion; and optionally, an anti-foaming agent and/or a fire retardant. It is found empirically that the inventive concentrate allows for the use of creosote, a known-effective biocide, without many of the drawbacks inherent in such use.

摘要： The invention relates to an improved process for drying and preserving wood products. The improved process comprises the steps of first drying the wood products by submerging them in a naphthalene poor, coal tar based heat transfer medium under conditions of elevated temperature and reduced pressure. The dried wood products then are impregnated with a naphthalene rich, coal tar based wood preservative agent by submerging said dried wood products in said agent under conditions of both elevated temperature and pressure.

摘要： A wood preservative composition having improved penetration properties comprises 15-90% by volume of coal-tar creosote, up to 45% by volume of coal tar, 7-66.5% by volume of paraffinic wax and 0.5-21% by volume of a high boiling paraffinic oil (i.e. an essentially hydrocarbon oil no more than 5% of which boils below 315 DEG C. at 1 atm. pressure), the volumetric ratio of creosote to coal tar being at least 1:1 and of wax to oil 2.3:1 to 19:1. The paraffinic wax may have a m.pt. of 35 DEG -58 DEG C. and the wax and/or oil may have an average M.W. of 280-340. The oil preferably contains at least 80% by volume of paraffinic hydrocarbons. 10 to 85% by volume of the paraffinic wax and oil content of the composition may be constituted by a soft wax product obtained by solvent de-oiling of crude wax obtained by solvent dewaxing of high viscosity index distillate lubricating oil.

摘要： An improved creosote wood preservative is produced that has a reduced crystal content, a light color and that makes a creosote-pentachlorophenol preservative less corrosive to metals. This improved creosote is produced by mildly hydrogenating a conventional coal tar creosote to reduce the aromaticity index, I.sub.A, by 10-62%. This is accomplished by hydrogenating the creosote at a temperature in the range of 250.degree.-450.degree.C. in the presence of a sulfur resistant hydrogenation catalyst.
