Envelopes or flat bags are made with closure flaps which are either gummed with dextrin or a similar substance which becomes adhesive when moistened, or the flaps and their corresponding contact areas of the rear side are both gummed with latex or similar adhesive which sticks in the dry state. These gumming operations are carried out in a single pass through a machine which includes an envelope-folding machine which may have stations for printing and embossing the envelopes or bags and making windows or sticking linings therein and which forms a single structural unit with the following consecutively arranged stations: (a) a station composed preferably of suction discs for receiving individually from the folding machine finished folded envelopes or bags with ungummed closure flaps; (b) a station for reopening the envelopes or bags; (c) a station for applying either dextrin or the like to the closure flap, or applying latex or the like to the closure flap and the corresponding contact area upon the rear side of the envelope or bag, at a distance from the edges thereof; (d) a station for staggering the envelopes or bags to which adhesive has been applied; (e) a station for drying the staggered envelopes or bags; and (f) a station for collecting finished envelopes or flat bags either with closure flaps open or with folded flaps, preferably standing on edge upon a delivery table.

The folder pushes the folded sheet material between the conveying components of the at least one pair of conveying components when it is at its folding position. The sheet material is advanced up to a stop. The folder comprises a knife extending in a third direction substantially at right angles to said first and said second direction. The sheet material can be conveyed in the third direction by actuating the conveying components.

Equipment which automatically manufactures cushioning material by filling air inside polyvinyl alcohol laminated paper and sealing the filled material into individual bags. The manufacturing equipment 1 is provided with a material roll 20 on which a sheet material of polyvinyl alcohol laminated paper is wound. The sheet material 10 is rolled out by a feeding roller 40 from the material roll 20, and the sheet material 10 in a known length, adjusted by a length adjusting device 50 having a roller 42 which goes up and down, is supplied intermittently to a bag forming device 100 located downstream thereof. The bag forming device 100 is provided with a pipe member 105 and a sailor 110, which is a guide plate to reverse the sheet material 10 and form it into a tubular shape, and the sheet material 10 is fed along the pipe member 105 after being formed into a tubular shape. Feed rollers 130 and auxiliary belt 120 are arranged at the periphery of the pipe member 105. The feed rollers 130 catch the superposed sections of both edges of the sheet material formed into a tubular shape and feed the material, inserting the superposed section into a center sealer 150. The center sealer 150 is provided with a heater and welds together the superposed sections. As a result of this welding, the sheet material is formed into a long tube. The center sealed tubular sheet material is further sent downstream from the lower end of the pipe member 105. Air is supplied from the top of the pipe member 105, and the air is filled inside the tubular sheet material. In such condition, the sheet material is sent to the end sealer/cutter. The end sealer/cutter 160 is provided with a pair of end sealers facing each other which weld the tubular sheet material into a bag shape and cut the material into individual bags with a cutter 165. At this time, the air amount is adjusted by the filled air amount adjusting device 170. The air filled cushioning material 200 is sent to the next process by a conveyor 210.

A separator/folder bag machine for developing individual, folded, plastic bags. A pair of high speed separation rollers, actuated by means of a servo motor driven eccentric linkage, engages a continuous plastic web to separate individual plastic bags formed tin the web. A pair of parallel, wide belts, and a pair of similar, overlying belts, engage both sides of the separated bags and transport the bags to a plurality of folding stations. Air jets at selected locations in the folder/separator controllably direct the bags through pairs of nip rolls to fold the bags along predetermined fold lines. Sensors in the folder/separator sense abnormal conditions and deactivate particular fold stations to reject improperly formed bags. A two speed slowdown mechanism at the discharge end of the separator/folder slows the folded bags to facilitate downstream handling. An optional stacker and indexing conveyor automatically stacks predetermined numbers of folded bags, aligns and compresses the bags to form an easily handled stack, and conveys the formed and compressed stack to downstream apparatus for further handling.
