摘要: The invention relates to methods and apparatus for effecting deep water repair of pipelines especially during a pipelaying operation. A damaged portion of the pipeline is located and is prepared for receiving a pipeline plug member by cutting away the damaged portion leaving a prepared pipeline end section. The pipeline plug member is secured in a submersible repair frame which is lowered from a floating vessel into an operational relationship with the prepared pipeline end section. The plug member is aligned with the pipeline end section and is inserted into the end section. Thereafter, the plug member is sealingly secured in the pipeline end section and the repair frame is removed from its operational relationship with the pipeline. The pipeline is dewatered and the end section is then raised onto a floating vessel. The repair frame, in addition to including means for holding and manipulating the plug member, also has a manually operable control panel manipulating means for controlling operations of the repair frame, and a submersible vehicle docking station to position a submersible vehicle in an operative relationship to the control panel manipulating means. The repair frame is preferably lowered to the bottom of the body of water with a pick up line or a pilot line attached to the plug member.

摘要: A manned or remotely controlled submergible chamber or tool carrier is provided with tool connection and disconnection to the work arm at an underwater location. A plurality of tools are mounted in a rack and each tool may be selectively connected and disconnected to a hydraulic drive means at the outward end of the retractably extensible portion of the work arm. All tool changing operations are remotely controlled from within the chamber or a remote station, as the operator views the tool changing operation. This tool system permits continuity of work arm operations without the need for the chamber to surface for tool changing. This tool changing system is particularly useful in performing work functions on underwater wellheads.

摘要: A device is attachable to an outwardly extensible, rotatable arm of a manned submergible chamber and is formed with a horizontally pivoted gate to engage and hold a cable upon rotation of the arm. The device is provided with a track-mounted blade to sever the cable; the blade being actuated from within the manned chamber. In another embodiment, the device is capable of gripping the cable before severing, severing the cable and then permitting the severed cable to be lifted to the surface while continuing to grip the cable. The device is particularly useful for removing entangled cables from an underwater work area, such as an offshore drilling station.

摘要: This invention relates to a self-propelled machine piloted by operators and working on the sea-bed, such machine comprising on the one hand a self-propelled chassis, comprising an electrically powered hydraulic pumping system driven by a submersible motor fed through a cable connecting the chassis to the surface and, on the other hand, a submarine which fixes itself on a platform connected to the self-propelled chassis, and in which submarine the operators are installed. The platform comprises ramps for precentering and centering the submarine. The submarine is fixed temporarily on the platform by electromagnets, and induction coils enable orders to be transmitted between the submarine and the self-propelled chassis.

摘要: Method and apparatus for emplacing a structure such as a casing, piling or core barrel into the floor of a body of water, hereafter referred to as sea floor. The structure is mounted on a towable and submersible vessel which includes a number of ballast tanks, and means are provided to selectively vary the ballast in certain ones of the tanks in a manner causing the vessel to have selectively controllable negative or positive buoyancy for descent or ascent, respectively, to or from the sea floor. A support device on the vessel is adapted to move the structure between a horizontal orientation for towing and descent and an upright position for drilling. after the vessel reaches the sea floor. The vessel descends with a positive metacenter to maintain the established orientation until it reaches the sea floor, after which it is anchored and leveled for commencing the drilling operation. The structure is advanced into the floor through increments of drilling strokes by means of rotating, through oscillatory or continuous rotary motion, a clamping mechanism which is engaged at incremental positions along the length of the structure. Means are provided to control the thrust force between the drilling end of the structure and the sea floor. An umbilical cable supplies power and control functions from a surface ship to the submerged vessel. Water under pressure is circulated through the interior volume of the structure to carry cuttings material away from the cutting end. Following completion of the drilling operation grout material is pumped into the void spaces between the structure and sea floor. The vessel is recovered for subsequent use by disengaging the clamping mechanism from the structure and blowing selective ones of the ballast tanks to cause the vessel to have positive buoyancy.

摘要: A submarine tethered working unit is lowered into proximity with an underwater apparatus requiring servicing. The working unit is then maneuvered under its own power into embracing guided relationship with the pylon of the apparatus and the unit then crawls upwardly on the pylon under its own power and locks itself rigidly to the pylon in a position near a removable module of the underwater apparatus. The working unit separates the module from the remainder of the apparatus and carries it to the surface of the water after separation from the pylon.
