A method of making a can assembly includes double-seaming a double-countersink metal end onto a can body and reforming the double-countersink metal end so as to effectively yield a single-countersink metal end of smaller diameter. In the process, the region of the can body adjacent the metal end becomes necked-in. The method can be applied to make a stackable three-piece can in which the reformed smaller-diameter metal end will fit within a double-seam of a metal end attached to the opposite end of the can body.

A sealed metal container adapted for use with candles. The container is coated with a layer of sealing compound so that the side and bottom seams of the container do not leak flowable material. The container includes a stamp formed base which is characterized by having an internally upwardly directed dome upon which a candle wick carrying element may be securely located on an apex region of the dome. The sealing compound contains a mixture of synthetic wax with sufficient adhesive so that the compound bonds to the surface of the container. Appropriate ratios of synthetic wax and adhesive material are mixed together so that the sealing compound has sufficient flexibility. A method for forming a sealed metal container is also provided in which the sealing compound is melted, pressurized, and sprayed through a nozzle toward the interior surface of the container. The container may be preheated and rotated during spraying to ensure complete coverage.

For producing the bunghole barrel (1) utilized as a multiple-trip barrel, a continuously extending heating tool is placed under pressure on the border (18) of the barrel body (2) from above, and a bunghole lid (6) with an annular extension (23) molded onto the underside of the lid flange (17) and coaxial to the lid axis is placed under pressure on the heating tool. After a heating-up period for superficially melting the annular extension (23) on the lid flange (17) and a continuous annular bead (26) molded to the barrel border (18), the lid (6) and the heating tool are lifted off. Subsequently, the lid (6) is placed with the annular extension (23) under pressure and pretensioning of the lid gasket (16) on the barrel border (18) in such a way that the annular extension (23) on the lid flange (17) is welded to the annular bead (26) on the barrel border (18) to form an annular sealing web (20) joining the lid flange (17) and the barrel border (18). After one-time or multiple usage, for reconditioning the bunghole (1), the bunghole lid (6) is separated from the widemouthed barrel body (2) by removal of the sealing web (20). The barrel body (2) can then be retrofitted to a widemouthed barrel with a simple lid and a clamping-ring closure of sheet metal, or as a lidded bunghole barrel or bunghole barrel can be provided with a welded-on or molded-on bunghole lid.

The invention deals with the butt-welded connection between the endwall and the body of a thermoplastic container. Contrary to the known connection the invention provides the endwall with an axially extending edge, which may form part of a gripping edge and which overlaps the weld, so that the weld beads are hidden, while further the area of transition between the endwall and its edge above the weld has an axial thickness which is in essence the same as the thickness of the endwall and the radial thickness of the axially extending edge of the endwall, so that the material flow of the plastic during molding of the endwall is more even.

The solder of the joints is out of contact with the interior of the flask, and any excess solder is received in the chamber, so that in use, liquid in the flask cannot become contaminated by contact with solder.
