The invention is related to a flotation process using an improved collector to remove alkaline earth metal carbonate impurities from phosphate ores. The flotation feed may be conditioned with the improved carbonate collector at acidic pH, and subjected to a reverse flotation. The cell overflow may be collected as waste in which carbonate minerals dominate, and the cell underflow may be the phosphate concentrate. The collector may be a combination of chemicals, comprising: (1) any kind of fatty acids, either conventional fatty acid, saponified fatty acid, or modified fatty acid; (2) chemicals with sulfonate or sulfate groups, such as dodecylbenzene sulfonic acid (DDBSA) or its salt, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), sodium coco sulfate (SCS), etc.; and (3) phosphorous-bearing chemicals, such as sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP), sodium hexametaphosphate (SFMP), trisodium phosphate (TSP), Tetrasodiumpyrophosphate (TSPP), etc. With the improved collector, the separation selectivity and phosphate recovery may be significantly improved.

Screen undersize sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP) particles are compacted, milled and moisturized by adding a sufficient amount of water thereon to produce a material containing on the average between about 15% and about 35% by weight moisture. The moisturized material is calcined to a temperature within the range of from about 300.degree. to about 600.degree. C., to produce a granular STPP product having a low friability, high absorptivity, and a bulk density within the range of from about 0.65 to about 0.87 g/cc.

A process for thermally treating fine-grained solids with high-oxygen gases at temperatures at which the solids can form molten and gaseous reaction products comprises carrying out the thermal treatment at least in part in a cyclone chamber. The solids, high-oxygen gases and, if desired, an energy carrier (usually a carbon-containing solid, liquid or gas) are mixed to form a suspension at a temperature below the reaction temperature. The suspension is fed to a vertical combustion path (tube) and reacts therein to form another suspension of primarily molten particles which is admitted to the cyclone chamber. Reactants are added to the gas phase within a core-flow region of the cyclone chamber and/or immediately after the discharge of gas therefrom to a cooling chamber.

A process for the joint production of titanium dioxide and sodium tripolyphosphate from ores of titanium and phosphorus, and from sulphuric acid, in which the titanium dioxide is produced by the "sulphate process" and the impure dilute aqueous solution of sulphuric acid resulting therefrom is concentrated and used in the initial attack of phosphatic ones to provide a solution containing vanadium and chromium which can be removed without requiring any preventive conversion. The resulting sodium phosphate is then converted to sodium tripolyphosphate in a known way.
