An aromatic oil say from catalytic cracking of hydrocarbon oil and/or a paraffinic oil as from solvent deasphalting of topped crude is air blown at elevated temperature and then further treated at elevated temperature in the presence of a catalyst, e.g., zinc chloride, to produce a hydrocarbon resin. The oil in which the resin has been produced is combined with a topped crude from which asphalt is to be produced or with an asphalt following which the admixture thus obtained is subjected to vacuum distillation or to a solvent deasphalting to remove unreacted or non-resinous, petroleum-derived fractions. An asphalt suitable for paving, having improved ductility and other properties, is obtained.

A method of making either a softener for rubber mixtures or a furnace fuel oil comprises the steps of heating a hydrocarbonaceous solvent and introducing thereinto waste from vulcanized or nonvulcanized rubbers under intensive stirring. Then the waste is thermally decomposed at a pressure of 5.multidot.10.sup.2 to 25.10.sup.5 n/m.sup.2, the hydrocarbonaceous solvent continuously circulating through the reaction mixture. The end product is separated from the formed suspension by distillation at a temperature of 200.degree. to 560.degree. C. and at a pressure of 10 to 2.multidot.10.sup.5 n/m.sup.2 in the presence of an inert gaseous agent.

A process for cracking hydrocarbon feedstocks comprising introducing a mixture of feedstock and hot gas into a reactor in which cracking temperatures are maintained, said reactor comprising;A. a hollow cylindrical tube having (i) a first end closure and a second end closure, at least one of said end closures being provided with an orifice disposed substantially centrally therein; and (ii) at least one hollow inlet feed chamber open at both ends passing through the cylindrical surface described by tube (A), one end of such feed chamber being disposed in the interior of tube (A) at about its periphery in such a manner that vapor, which is passed through said chamber, will flow substantially tangentially to the inner surface described by cylindrical tube (A), provided that the rate of flow is sufficient therefor, creating a vortex-like flow within tube (A); andB. at least one hollow tube open at both ends;Wherein:A. one end of tube (B) is connected to tube (A) at its orifice in substantially concentric alignment therewith and in open communication with tube (A);b. tube (A) has a length to diameter ratio of about 0.01:1 to about 1:1;C. the ratio of the equivalent diameter of the orifice of tube (A) to the equivalent diameter of tube (B) is about 1:1 to about 0.1:1.D. tube (B) has a length to equivalent diameter ratio of about 5:1 to about 200:1; andE. the ratio of the volume of tube (A) to the volume of tube (B) is about 0.01 to about 5:1.

A catalytic process for hydrocracking crude oil fractions into a C.sub.2 -C.sub.5 alkane mixture having a normal paraffin to isoparaffin molar ratio greater than about 3:1 and thermally cracking this mixture to recover ethylene and propylene.The hydrocracking catalysts used are made from a Group VIII metal, a Group VI B metal or mixtures thereof, with a halogen supported on a silica-alumina support or a natural or synthetic faujasite. The catalysts must be sulfided prior to or during use.
