Organic dyes containing at least one acid group of an acid of pentavalent phosphorus, arsenic or antimony are used to dye aluminium having a dyeable oxide layer (see Division B6). Dyes of mono-, dis- and tris-azo, metallized azo, nitro xanthene, quinophthalone, anthraquinone and phthalocyanine series are described.ALSO:3 - (41 - Hydroxy - 31 - amninophenylsulphonylamino)-phenylphosphonic acid is prepared by condensing 3-nitro-4-chlorobenzene-1-sulphonic acid chloride with 3-aminophenyl phosphonic acid and the condensate is subsequently hydrolysed and reduced. 2 - (31 - Nitro - 41 - chlorobenzenesulphonyl-amino)-ethylphosphonic acid is prepared by condensing 3 - nitro - 4 - chlorobenzene - sulphonyl chloride with 2-amino-ethylphosphonic acid. 1 - Phenyl - 3 - methyl - 5 - pyrazolone - 31-phosphonic acid is prepared by diazotizing 3-aminophenylphosphonic acid, reducing the diazo compound to the phenylhydrazine and condensing this with ethyl acetoacetate.

Anthraquinone compounds of the formula, ##STR1## wherein R is hydrogen, alkyl or cycloalkyl, which are useful as intermediates for disperse dyes and as sublimable dyes for thermal transfer recording, are prepared by allowing the compound of the formula, ##STR2## wherein X is hydrogen or sulfonic acid group, to react with a cyanogenating agent in an aqueous medium in the presence of a compound, such as polyalkylene glycols.
