The invention discloses a sleeve-type coal material decomposition apparatus which includes a kiln body. The inside of the kiln body is set with coal material decomposition-promoting layers and circular heating layers centered on the axis of kiln body; the circular coal material decomposition-promoting layers and circular heating layers are isolated from each other; both ends of the circular coal material decomposition-promoting layer are respectively connected to the coal inlet and coal outlet on kiln body and are also connected to the decomposition gas collecting mechanism on kiln body. The coal material decomposition-promoting layers and circular heating layers are isolated from each other, which is helpful for the acquisition of pure coal decomposition gas. The heat released from circular heating layers is fully absorbed by adjacent set coal material decomposition-promoting layers via conduction and radiation forms; the full absorption of pulverized coal brings better effect of complete decomposition.

Devolatilizable fine-grained material which contains hydrocarbons is devolatilized by means of fine-grained solids which have been heated to temperatures of about 500.degree. to 1000.degree. C. The devolatilizable fine-grained material is mixed with the heated solids and is thus heated to temperatures of about 400.degree. to 900.degree. C. The mixture is passed through a dwell zone, and gaseous and vaporous devolatilization products are withdrawn and cooled. The heated solids are fed to the dwell zone as a loosened stream in a trickling and/or agitated state of motion, and the devolatilizable fine-grained material is introduced into said stream in order to be admixed thereto. The heated solids and the devolatilizable fine-grained material can be mixed in a weight ratio of 3:1 to 12:1. The stream of trickling heated soids can be deflected at least in part.

An apparatus and method for performing a continuous thermal treatment of organic carbonaceous materials under controlled pressure in which the feed material is introduced into the system in the form of a slurry, and the level of liquid is maintained at a preselected operating level, serving as a gas-tight seal. The feed material is conveyed upwardly of the liquid operating level and is thereafter introduced into a reaction chamber in which it is heated to within a controlled elevated temperature range under controlled pressure in a manner to effect vaporization of at least a portion of the volatile substances therein, forming a gaseous phase composed of condensible and noncondensible vapors. The gaseous phase is withdrawn from the reaction chamber in a direction countercurrent to the travel of the feed material and in heat exchange relationship therewith, effecting condensation of the condensible phase and transport of the noncondensible phase, and is extracted from the system through a discharge port disposed above the liquid operating level. The thermally reacted product is cooled and transferred from the reaction chamber into a receiving chamber from which it is extracted continuously or intermittently.

A gravity feed inclined retort apparatus provides for a distillation process in which oil is removed from shale ore in the inclined portion of the retort, and the gaseous oil is removed to a vapor condenser/separator in which the vapor is condensed into the product oil. The retorted shale is fed onto a continuous chain stoker, or other similar conveying device, where the coke portion of the retorted shale is burned as fuel for the retort. Hot gases from the combustion zone where air is directed through the burning coke are used to preheat the shale ore above the dew point of the oil, through a heat exchange plate; and the hot gases then flow through the shale ore in the retort chamber, picking up the oil vapors from the heated shale, and carrying this oil-filled gas into a vapor condenser/separator. Some of the oil vapors are also condensed onto cooled side walls extending along the retort chamber and this condensed oil flows into oil collection gutters. The retort chamber is slightly enlarged along its length in the downward direction of shale movement to preclude clinkering and blockage of the continuous operation. The retort chamber is oriented at approximately 45.degree. from the horizontal for gravity feed; and the heat exchange plate is raised at its center and pitched at an angle of about 15.degree. relative to a line extending across its width for free shale movement down the expanding retort chamber.
