A process for the production of anode grade coke from a hydrocarbon feed characterized by high levels of sulfur and metals comprises subjecting a vacuum resid to a fluidized bed coking process so as to produce gas, distillates, coke and a residual bottom stream, filtering the residual stream so as to remove solids and thereafter coking the filtered stream.

An improved fluid catalytic cracking process providing improved product yield and selectivity which employs a split flow of recycled, regenerated catalyst to the reactor riser. Process operating temperatures control the flow rates of the recycled, regeneration catalyst.

A mixture of a hydrocarbon-selective solvent -- e.g. isobutane -- and deasphalted oil is separated in a two-stage hot-separator system at progressively higher temperatures and substantially the same pressure. Resulting vaporous phases are subjected to a cold-flash separation at a lower pressure and a considerably lower temperature. The initial hot separation, in the two-stage system, is effected at a temperature from about 1.0.degree. F. to about 25.degree. F. above the critical temperature of the solvent; the second is conducted at a temperature about 30.degree. F. to about 130.degree. F. above that in the initial hot-separation. This technique is especially advantageous when integrated into a catalytic slurry process for the conversion of metal- and asphaltene-containing hydrocarbonaceous black oils.

A method and system for cracking hydrocarbons with distinct fluid catalyst particles differing in activity, selectivity and physical characteristics is described wherein a common catalyst regeneration system is employed which will measurably contribute to the heat requirements of the operation as well as the activity/selectivity characteristics of the catalyst employed. Except for size, the catalysts upon make-up may have different or identical catalytic characteristics. However, upon contact with a particular hydrocarbon stream, such as vacuum resid, the selectivity and coke producing characteristics of the catalysts may be altered.

Ethane is converted to LPG and gasoline and/or aromatics concentrate in a combination process which comprises directly passing olefin effluent from the thermal cracking of ethane over a special crystalline aluminosilicate zeolite of the ZSM-5 type and recovering aromatics and C.sub.3 + hydrocarbons. For best yields, the thermal cracking step is conducted under more severe conditions than are used when ethylene production is optimized. The second, olefin conversion step is carried out at either the same pressure as the cracking step or higher. The process is of particular interest where low cost ethane is available.

An improvement in the fluid cracking process is obtained by contacting the hydrocarbon feed in a riser reaction zone first with a recycled coke-containing spent catalyst and then contacting the resultant mixture with freshly regenerated catalyst to produce the desired conversion of the hydrocarbon feed and a coke-containing spent catalyst, a portion of the spent catalyst being recycled without regeneration to the inlet of the reaction zone and the remainder being regenerated and returned to an intermediate point in the reaction zone. The recycled coke-containing spent catalyst has sufficient activity so that the highly reactive nitrogen and carbon residue containing hydrocarbon contaminants in the oil feed will deposit on the spent catalyst and thus minimize the deactivation of the freshly regenerated catalyst used in the subsequent cracking of the oil feed.By contacting the oil feed first with the recycled spent catalyst, this invention allows the refiner to utilize the full activity and selectivity characteristics of the freshly regenerated catalyst in order to obtain higher yields of the desired products from the cracking operations.

A process is disclosed for producing a lubricating oil base stock by: (1) fractionating a hydrocarbon feedstock boiling above 650.degree. F into a plurality of fractions including at least a lower-boiling fraction and a higher-boiling fraction; (2) contacting the lower-boiling fraction and hydrogen in a first hydrocracking zone, at hydrocracking conditions, with a hydrocracking catalyst to obtain an effluent comprising hydrocarbons boiling in the range of the feedstock and hydrocarbons boiling below the boiling range of the feedstock; (3) contacting at least the hydrocarbons boiling in the range of said feedstock formed in step (2), the higher-boiling fraction from step (1) without substantial intermediate deasphalting thereof, and hydrogen in a second hydrocracking zone, at hydrocracking conditions, with a hydrocracking catalyst to obtain a lubricating oil base stock including a plurality of lube oil fractions of reduced viscosity index spread over the range of the lube oil fractions; and recovering the lube oil base stock. Preferably, the resulting lube oil base stocks have a viscosity index spread of not more than about 15 units, preferably not more than 10, over the lube oil base stock viscosity range of light neutrals to bright stocks.
