A monorail switching arrangement is disclosed for switching the travel of a vehicle to either a continued-travel monorail section or a change-of-direction switched-travel monorail section, characterized by the provision of a plurality of vertically-displaceable horizontal switching wheels arranged on opposite sides of the first monorail section for displacement between upper and lower positions in alternate engagement with pairs of continued-travel and switched-travel control tracks mounted on opposite sides of the monorail, respectively. In one embodiment, the switching wheels are vertically displaceable relative to the chassis, and in a second embodiment, the chassis and the switching wheels are vertically displaceable as a unit relative to the vehicle support wheels and the monorail.

In the magnetic suspension railway disclosed, electrically-controlled carrier magnets, located on opposite sides under a railway car and coupled to two stationary magnetic carrier rails levitate the car. Electrically controlled, guide magnets, fixed under the car on both sides, guide the car between magnetic guide rails. The carrier and guide magnets for each side of the car are mounted on two mounts extending longitudinally underneath the car and facing the support and guide rails. Guiding the car onto one path or the other through a switch area at a fork is accomplished by deactivating only the guide magnets on one side of the car. At the switch area fixed support magnets in one of two rows between the rails appear above the one of an auxiliary rail projecting from the mount holding the deactivated guide magnet. The auxiliary rail is displaced from the vertical relative to the electromagnetic row into a magnetically asymmetrical position. This produces a lateral force counteracting the excess force produced by the still activated guide magnet.

An educational apparatus is traversed horizontally for the purpose of increasing learning capabilities is pictured. The apparatus is in the design of a figure eight lying on its side longitudinally and laterally intersected at its center by a column and row of straight tracks 30. The apparatus is comprised of tracks, straight 30, arced 40, and curved 50, contiguously connected to one another and an octagon shaped distinct end coupler 96 used as a bridge to connect the non-contiguous ends of tracks, straight 30, arced 40, and curved 50. The distinct end coupler 96 is located in the center of the apparatus. The distinct end coupler 96 is not only a structure used to connect the non-contiguous ends of tracks but also a station from which a human receives instruction prior to traversing the apparatus and a portal used by a walking human to traverse from track to track in the proper direction and sequence, important for basic brain processing methods. The apparatus is designed to be traversed by a human in specific patterns in order to promote, foster, and facilitate the development of brain functions controlling balance, coordination, spatial awareness, and vestibular function thereby increasing learning capabilities. As a result of traversing the apparatus in specific patterns, the human brain will process alphabetic and numeric symbols more efficiently. This is especially important in the development of early childhood learners. The educational importance for the invention is based upon brain research findings that support the link of sensory motor development and increased learning capacity.

Transportation apparatus comprises a guideway and at least one vehicle on the guideway. The vehicle has an integral load-carrying compartment. The guideway includes a divergent junction and selectively operable switches to direct the vehicle to follow either the left hand or right hand path out of the junction. The vehicle has a bottom support adjacent the bottom of the load-carrying compartment and at both sides of the vehicle for engagement with lower support rails on the guideway. Cantilever supports engage upper guide surfaces provided on the guideway. The cantilever supports are duplicated on both sides of the vehicle and include one and the same upper follower, for engagement with an upper guide surface on the guideway, common to both of the cantilever supports so that the vehicle may be supported in cantilever fashion from either side on a single lower support rail and a single upper guide surface.

A first support beam extends from the switch entrance into the central portion of the switch and is arranged between the remaining two support beams. The remaining two support beams extend from the central portion of the switch to the switch exit. The switching function from one path of travel to another path of travel is accomplished by electromagnetic principles.
