    摘要: A system for reducing NO.sub.x gases found in the exhaust stream of the internal combustion engine is provided which includes an internal combustion engine having associated therewith a means for supplying fuel and oxygen to the engine, a manifold system for directing or channeling the exhaust gases from the engine, and a NO.sub.x reducing catalyst assembly communicating with the manifold which includes a housing having a NO.sub.x reducing catalytic structure of apertured thin metal foil positioned therein which comprises a durable, chromium containing corrosion resistant nickel base substrate having metallurgically bonded thereto, on at least one surface, an effective amount of a NO.sub.x reducing catalyst selected from the group consisting of iron, nickel, cobalt, copper, manganese and mixtures thereof.

    摘要: An exhaust cleaning system for use with an automotive multiple-cylinder internal combustion engine including first and second groups of engine cylinders which are to be alternately fired, comprising a thermal reactor composed of an outer tubular structure formed with a first group of exhaust inlet ports leading from the first group of engine cylinders and a second group of exhaust inlet ports leading from the second group of engine cylinders, an inner tubular structure positioned within the outer tubular structure and formed with openings, and at least one air-injection nozzle opening in a longitudinal end portion of the interior or a re-combustion chamber of the inner tubular structure, wherein exhaust gases from each of the first group of engine cylinder are fired in the vicinity of the nozzle openings with the agency of secondary air injected from the nozzle and exhaust gases from each of the second group of engine cylinders are fired by the resultant hot gases advancing through a hot zone of the re-combustion chamber. Additional secondary air and/or secondary fuel may be admixed to the exhaust gases preferably during low-load condition of the engine when the temperature of the exhaust gases lowers.

    摘要: Heated, exhaust gas is conducted through a chamber into which a protective conical housing is inserted exposing the tip of a spark plug. An ignition coil assembly is fixedly mounted within the conical housing having a high voltage contact in engagement with the spark plug to ignite the exhaust gas for pollution reducing combustion. The housing is heat resistant to protect the coil assembly from heat and a liquid spray may be directed into the heated exhaust gas.

    摘要: An apparatus for purifying exhaust gases of internal combustion engines comprises a housing which has an intermediate chamber which is filled with catalytic material and a chamber on each side thereof which communicate with the catalytic chamber through perforated walls. The intermediate catalytic chamber connects to a central dome-like extension providing a filling opening for additional catalytic material. An exhaust gas conduit connects into the chamber on one side of the catalytic material chamber and terminates at the inlet to an inspiration tube having a narrow throat inlet at the discharge of the exhaust conduit within the housing and which has a diverging nozzle portion or diffusor section which discharges into the other chamber. The housing includes means for deflecting the exhaust gases backwardly through the catalytic material of the catalytic material chamber for flow subsequently out through an exhaust connection. Supplemental air is introduced into the apparatus preferably between a double wall formation of the housing so that the air is preheated and then delivered to a location for flow through the inlet of the inspiration tube under the induced flow conditions which are set up by the discharge of the exhaust gases into the inlet.

    摘要: The electric heating of a catalytic converter casing around the catalyst zone is provided to preclude the premature contraction of the casing and the crushing of the contained catalyst material while the catalyst is still in a high temperature, expanded condition. The heating operation will normally be controlled so as to be off during the periods that the engine is in operation and will also be cut off when the catalyst bed cools down to a predetermined low temperature where crushing will not be likely to occur.
