There is disclosed an easily releaseable, internally threaded fastener having at least one axial slot which extends substantially through the wall of the fastener. The external wall of the fastener is non-cylindrical, e.g. hexagonal, or three-lobed, to permit the application of a fastening torque to the fastener. The fastener is surrounded by a retainer sleeve having a mating, internal wall portion which provides hoop strength to the fastener. The retainer also has an annular recess in its internal wall whereby the retainer can be slid axially, or rotated, to release the fastener. The fastener assembly includes a metal spacer seated in each axial slot of the fastener to permit the even transmission of the fastener application torque. In preferred embodiments, the fastener is formed by cutting several axial slots through the body of the fastener, but terminating short of severing the threads, thereby providing a fastener which, when released by the retainer, will yieldingly fail, thus avoiding the mechanical shock of release which is experienced upon the release of separate fastener segments.

An assembly for attaching a re-entry vehicle to its booster with a high preload force includes a split nut and a split band for encompassing the nut and retaining it in a collapsed condition in which it forces the booster against the re-entry vehicle at the desired preload level. The split band is held in an assembled condition about the nut by a plurality of separation bolts and a plurality of yieldable belleville washer and bolt assemblies. Actuating the separation bolts allows the band to move to a disassembled condition and the split nut to an expanded condition. However, the rate of their movements is controlled by the spring rate of the belleville washers whereby the preload is released in a gradual manner.

Ring rotatable relative to housing but axially fixed has convex cone spaced from seat and engaged by bevel of segments for spreading. Resilient ring in peripheral groove of segments. Outside notches at segment edges receive housing pin or ring, to prevent relative rotation and restrain lateral play at abutting edges. Numerous variations of construction disclosed.

The fastener is characterized by the provision of a collet member, which is composed of a number of segmental collet elements, and a retaining member which surrounds the collet member to retain the elements thereof in a cooperative relationship. The collet member is displaceable within or from the retaining member to permit separation of the collet elements one from the other and, hence, to permit quick release of the fastener from a device to which it is fitted.
