Abstract:
An apparatus for continuously controlling fluid flow in a sewer conduit, comprising: a) moisture sensors detecting levels of fluid in this conduit; b) an inflatable bladder, mounted in the sewer conduit for releasably sealing in fluid tight fashion a section of this conduit; a compressed air source for inflating the bladder; and a control box including a CPU sensitive to the moisture sensor(s) and actuating the air compressor responsively to conduit fluid level conditions reaching beyond a preset threshold value. The performance of the apparatus is independent of the speed of fluid flow in the sewer conduit.
Abstract:
A fluid flow regulating valve using a thermal expansion material. The valve includes a body provided with inlet and outlet ports; a displacement control part in the body, the displacement control part containing the thermal expansion material and displaced toward the outlet port when the thermal expansion material expands, thereby regulating a degree of opening of the outlet port; and a heater for heating the thermal expansion material within the displacement control part. The displacement control part includes a container containing the thermal expansion material, the container being coupled to the body and an expansion plate for regulating the degree of opening of the outlet port by being expanded in accordance with an expansion of the thermal expansion material, the expansion plate being hermetically coupled to the container.
Abstract:
A damper apparatus which includes a rigid frame mounted on an elongated rod. A sheet material flexible cover closely covers the frame. The frame, cover and elongated rod are inserted within a duct with the ends of the elongated rod protruding through the wall of the duct. The covered frame can be pivoted exteriorly of the duct by pivoting of the elongated rod to any desired position and be caused to remain in that position functioning to restrict the flow of gas through the duct. The flexible cover functions as a sound damper for mounting the sound that is created by moving of the gas through the duct.
Abstract:
The subject invention is a damper apparatus which includes an expandable, rigid frame mounted on an elongated rod. A sheet material flexible cover covers the frame. With the frame located in a collapsed configuration, the frame and cover are inserted through a hole in a duct, and, once inside the duct, the frame is expanded with the cover tightly encasing the frame. With the frame expanded, the cross-sectional area of the duct can be substantially completely closed. The covered frame can be pivoted to any desired position and caused to remain in that position which will function to restrict the flow of fluid through the duct.
Abstract:
A device for plugging a pipe includes a resilient, hollow body member that expands with the application of internally applied pressure to block the pipe. The body member has at one end a conical shaped wall with an apex that points inward. At ambient pressure, the diameter of the body member is less than the diameter of the pipe into which it is inserted. The diameter of the body member increases as the internal pressure increases, and the length of the conical shaped wall decreases.
Abstract:
An apparatus for inoculating a sample to or withdrawing a sample from a vessel or conduit includes a body with an internal sample cavity, a valve operating rod movable to open and close an orifice to the sample cavity a coupler to attach the body to a port of the vessel or conduit. A manual and/or automatic device can be provided for moving the valve operating rod to open and close the orifice. The manual device includes a trigger actuator. A portion of the sample cavity is formed by an endcap which includes the orifice. The sample cavity has an inner wall and outer wall with a space therebetween. The space can thermally insulate the sample cavity from the ambient environment as well as the interior of the vessel or conduit. The valve operating rod has a diaphragm attached to one end. A blunt sealing tip of the diaphragm seals the orifice when the valve operating rod moves to close the orifice. The valve operating rod has a portion which extends into the diaphragm to support the diaphragm and to form a seal at an opening to the sample cavity through which the diaphragm extends.
Abstract:
A portable inflatable valve is provided for disposition in a floor drain opening to prevent the undesired flow of toxic liquids into the drain opening. The valve includes a rigid support structure adapted to rest on the floor surface above the drain opening. A pressurized gas cylinder is located below the rigid support structure for pressuring a surrounding elastomeric sock into sealing contact with the hole side surface. Actuation of the gas cylinder is accomplished by a manual plunger arranged for downward motion to puncture a foil closure on the upper end of the gas cylinder.
Abstract:
A normally closed valve system for sealing off low pressure gas flow through a pipe. The valve system comprises an inflatable bladder which blocks relatively low pressure flow through the pipe and permits relatively high pressure flow through the pipe. In one form, the invention comprises a fail-safe bypass monitor and method for measuring air inleakage in a steam turbine. The monitor selectably bypasses low volumetric flow rates from a pipe for measurement and admits flow through the pipe whenever the flow rate exceeds a predetermined value.
Abstract:
A bellows assembly is secured to a retainer by extrusions having a mushroom or arrow shaped cross section. Air flowing through the terminal impinges upon an impervious film covering the central portion of the device and is diverted into two flow paths. Initially the flow paths extend between the film and the cutoff plates which coact to form a tight shut off. Downstream of the cutoff plates, the flow paths are between a porous foam covering the bellows and foam surrounding the cutoff plates to provide a sound reducing effect. If necessary or desirable, the back of the retainer may be covered with foam or other suitable sound insulating material.
Abstract:
A valve which is to be used as a component of plastics bags and trays for packaging foodstuffs and other perishable goods. The valve consists essentially of a small spherical chamber having an inlet and an outlet. The chamber is made from two hemi-spherical walls having different resilience. In order to close the valve one wall is made to spring into contact with the other wall so that the two walls enter into such close intimate contact that communication between the inlet and the outlet through the valve is prevented.
