A damped instrument kinematic mount providing novel damping features to protect instruments from damaging flight loads. The mounting scheme utilizes any number of identical strut elements to greatly reduce manufacturing complexity and costs. Improved kinematic mount performance is achieved by arranging the six strut configuration to approximately uncouple the mount suspension modes. A spherical joint damper is located at strut flexure locations and utilizes a viscoelastic damping material that deforms in shear. Alternatively, cylindrical slot mount dampers are placed at strut flexure locations. The cylindrical slot mount dampers use o-rings or washers placed within the slotted machined mount bar stock. The kinematic mounts can then be arranged in a classical truss arrangement pattern or other configuration providing desired damping characteristics.

To prevent the interengaged frame members from disengaging, a lock element is associated with a joint between frame members. This lock element is a rotary lock with a trilobal locking surface. Additional locking capability can be provided by a lock ring or collar which surrounds a joint between two frame members and prevents unintentional disengagement.

A deployable perimeter truss reflector is capable of achieving a hitherto unobtainable thirty to one ratio in size between its size in the deployed condition and the stowed condition. The improved truss reflector structure is characterized by deployable spars that are attached to and extend from a basic frame structure to the truss. When deployed the spars are positioned outwardly and away from the basic frame of the truss, carrying the catenaries, and, the latter carrying the reflective surface into position at an end of the truss cylindrical truss. New catenary systems, deployment mechanisms, basic truss structures and cable management systems are also described.

A clamping device for releasably connecting two profile pieces, wherein the first profile piece has an undercut longitudinal groove and the second profile piece has a box-shaped hollow profile, has a clamping piece inserted into the second profile piece. The clamping piece has a hook-shaped head piece and a hammer head for engaging the longitudinal groove of the first profile piece. The hammer head is connected to a free end face of the head piece. The head piece has an inner sidewall with a slanted surface. The slanted surface extends perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of the clamping piece. The clamping piece includes a flat drawing piece. The head piece and the drawing piece are displaceable relative to one another in the longitudinal direction of the clamping piece. A clamping screw or an eccentric cooperating with the slanted surface is inserted in the drawing piece and is accessible through an opening in the second profile piece. Tightening of the clamping screw displaces the drawing piece relative to the head piece such that the hammer head is fastened in the longitudinal groove. The clamping piece also has an elastic loop bent around at least 180.degree. and connected between head piece and drawing piece. The clamping piece, including head piece, hammer head, drawing piece, and elastic loop, is a unitary part. The elasticity of the elastic loop is sufficient to disengage the head piece with the hammer head upon releasing the clamping screw or eccentric.
