A method for correcting yaw in a DGPS (global positioning system) based guidance system mounted on a vehicle. The method corrects for a yaw induced heading/cross track error due to a DGPS antenna being mounted a significant distance from the point of operation (e.g., the vehicle operator's location, the center of the vehicle, etc.). The method determines a ground track of a vehicle using a DGPS system and a coupled antenna mounted on the vehicle. A heading of the vehicle is also determined using a compass mounted on the vehicle. The heading and the ground track are compared to determine whether a difference exits and the magnitude of the difference. Using the difference, the DGPS determined position is adjusted to be the position of the operator/center of the vehicle. Using this guidance information, an indication is generated operable for directing the vehicle to maintain a desired ground track. The indication is generated such that it compensates for the difference between the ground track at the point of operation and the desired ground track. The indication is generated to compensate for the specific mounting location of the DGPS antenna on the vehicle. In so doing, the indication properly directs the vehicle to maintain the desired ground track regardless of any yaw, crab, etc., of the vehicle, or any offset of the DGPS antenna due thereto.

A route guidance system for a pedestrian. An input unit inputs a departure point and a destination point of the pedestrian. A route data memory stores route data representing position and connection of each route comprising a road network. A route calculation unit calculates a route from the departure point to the destination point by referring to the route data in said route data memory. A landmark memory stores landmark data for the pedestrian's confirmation; a landmark represents a signpost of the departure point, the destination point, and the route. A landmark selection unit selects the landmark data corresponding to the route calculated by said route calculation unit from said landmark memory. A presentation unit presents a route guidance to the pedestrian using the calculated route and the selected landmark data.

An integrated indoor and outdoor positioning system and method. A first communication unit aperiodically emits an ultrasonic signal. A second communication unit receives the ultrasonic signal and transmits an identification signal in response to receiving the ultrasonic signal. One of the two communication units is placed at a predetermined position and the other of the two communication units is placed with an object. Identification information obtained from the identification signal is used to determine position information indicating that the object is at the predetermined position. The first communication unit is placed at the predetermined position and the second communication unit accompanies the object. Alternatively, the first communication unit accompanies the object and the second communication unit is placed at the predetermined position. One of the two communication units may also include a GPS receiver for receiving GPS signals from a plurality of satellites or pseudolites and computing position information therefrom. The GPS receiver applies differential GPS corrections computed by a GPS reference receiver to improve the accuracy of the position information. Position information is transmitted to a base station over an assigned radio frequency and during a time slot allocated to the communication unit that is transmitting the position information.
