A word game for entertaining players and improving their vocabularies. The method of playing the word game comprises the steps of providing a plurality of tiles each with a front and a back. The front and back of each of the tiles has a unique letter of the alphabet imprinted thereon. A timer is provided. The timer expires after a predetermined amount of time has elapsed. A card is provided for each player, each having a plurality of columns and a series of rows. All players simultaneously participate. One player shakes all the tiles in a tumbler and lets one tile fall out. The front and the back of the tile are viewed and the timer is started. Players write two series of words on the card they are holding. Each of the series is written in a unique row of the card. Words in the first series begin with one of the letters of the tile. Words in the second series begin with the other of the letters of the tile. Each of the words written in the first of the columns is of one syllable. Words in consecutive columns increase by one syllable. A score of three points per word per syllable is assigned. The score of all words is summed to obtain a final score. The player having the highest final score is the winner.

Illustrations of letters and their phonetically correct sounds are linked with commonly associated words. For example, the letter “s” is paired with an illustration of and the word “sun” to teach an unvoiced “s” sound; or paired with an illustration of and the word “rose” to teach a voiced “zzz” sound. The letter's textured surface is distinguishable from the pages' flat surface. While simultaneously tracing the letter's bumpy surface, the user vocalizes the letter's name, phonetically correct sound and associated word. Combinations of letters are used to blend sounds to form words. The same method can be used to teach number recognition and meaning.

A reading device for teaching or learning reading is composed of: (A) a two-layer structure containing a first layer, an opposite second layer, viewing slots formed in corresponding portions of the first and second layers, and a hollow pocket defined between the first and second layers; wherein: the first layer has printed on a front face thereof a letter/image chart, and the second layer has printed on a back face thereof a numerical listing of the names of the objects represented by the images on the letter/image chart; and (B) a flat card having a front face which is blank and a back face which preferably has printed thereon one or more sample words or sentences. The flat card is disposed for insertion into the hollow pocket defined between the first and second layers. Methods for teaching or learning reading using the reading device involves obtaining the reading device; obtaining reading material; and, for each unfamiliar word in the reading material: locating the first letter or single-sound letter combination of the word on the letter/image chart; pronouncing the name of the image proximate to the letter so as to sound out the letter or letter combination; and repeating these two steps for each successive letter or single-sound letter combination in the word so as to pronounce the entire word.
