A power converter apparatus comprises a detection circuit, a control circuit and a time period generating circuit. The detection circuit detects whether a power device is in a short-circuit state. The control circuit sets, when the detection circuit has detected that the power device is in the short-circuit state, the power device in an inoperable state for a predetermined time period, and restores the power device to an operable state after the passing of the predetermined time period. The time period generating circuit defines the predetermined time period for setting the power device in the inoperable state, by measuring a time from the detection of the short-circuit state by the detection circuit.

There is provided by this invention an apparatus and method for generating voltage pulses to first and second magnetron devices in a plasma chamber. An isolation transformer is connected to a pulsed DC power supply having a flux sensor, such as a Hall effect sensor, in close proximity to its air gap to monitor the transformer flux. A control circuit is connected to the flux sensor to control the duty cycle of the transformer by controlling the flux of the transformer such that the maximum and minimum peak transformer fluxes are equal in magnitude and opposite in sign to prevent saturation.

A three-point or multipoint converter is described. The converter has a series circuit formed of at least four main switches per converter phase, which are connected electrically in parallel between a positive and a negative DC voltage rail. An individual snubber capacitance is disposed in parallel with each individual main switch. At least two converter levels are formed between the DC voltage rails, a junction point or junction points and voltage neutral points of the converter levels are accessible. An output of the converter phase is connected to the voltage neutral points of the converter levels, via a series circuit formed of at least one resonant inductance and independently controllable bidirectional auxiliary switches. Junction points of the snubber capacitances that do not at the same time form the output of the converter phase are connected via charge control switches to the junction point or the junction points of the converter levels.

New techniques are presented for increased power handling capability for model railroad decoders and other attached electronics when space and cooling limitations exist. Additionally, novel usage of existing electronic voltage measurements permit an improvement in Overcurrent fault detection and recovery. These techniques allow new designs with improved reliability and load current capacity.

A high-power modulation system includes drive circuitry that receives input signals from the signal source via a series of transformers. The drive circuitry amplifies the input signals and provides the resulting amplified signals to the high-power switch. A storage capacitor within the drive circuitry stores energy derived from the input signals, and the stored energy is used to power the drive circuitry. One embodiment takes advantage of inductive ringing to more rapidly turn off the high-power switch. A diode connected in series between two drive transistors rectifies the ringing signals, pulling a control signal to the high-power switch negative.

The protection circuit comprises a storage capacitor which is coupled with a terminal of a secondary winding which charges said storage capacitor during the on-interval of the switching transistor. During the off-interval of the switching transistor the charge of the storage capacitor is fed to the driver stage or the control capacitor for closing or keeping closed the switching transistor when one of the secondary windings has a short circuit.

A method to dynamically clamp the feedback control voltage in DC—DC converters, with the purpose to limit the duty-cycle and to protect the magnetic components against saturation, over a wide range of input voltage conditions. The clamping level is function of input voltage and allows the design optimization of the magnetic components in the way of minimizing their size and is active only during transient events, when momentary open loop condition may occur.

A switching circuit, a method of processing power and a single stage power factor corrector employing the switching circuit or the method. In one embodiment, the switching circuit includes: (1) a power switch coupled to a primary winding of a transformer; and (2) an active clamp coupled to the power switch. The active clamp includes: (2a) series-coupled first and second capacitors, coupled across the power switch and the primary winding, having opposing polarities thereacross, and (2b) a clamping switch coupled to a node between the series-coupled first and second capacitors. The clamping switch opens to allow energy stored in the first capacitor to be transferred to an output of the power converter via the second capacitor. The clamping switch further closes to allow energy stored in the second capacitor to be transferred to the output.
