A multi-drop communication link, consisting of a master and a plurality of slaves is intrinsically safe for use in a hazardous environment. Slaves are in parallel and communicate with the master through transmit and receive shunt-diode safety barriers. An opto-coupler interface is provided between each slave and the transmit and receive circuits communicating with the master. The opto-couplers comprise infrared emitter-detector pairs which can be spaced apart by an intrinsically safe distance.

A broad band directional coupler including a conventional attenuator is disclosed. The coupler permits detection of signals propagating simultaneously in opposite directions on a single-signal path or transmission line. Detection may occur at one or a multiplicity of ports located at arbitrary positions along the line. In the specific embodiments disclosed, the attenuators employed are symmetrical, .pi., O, T, and H attenuator networks. The invention, however, is equally applicable to .pi., O, T or H attenuator networks which are not symmetrical. The specific embodiments shown employing active devices have wide frequency responses which are flat and flat to DC. Where operation down to DC is not required and where a broad band directional coupler comprised entirely of passive elements is desired, a version of the coupler circuit employing transformers is disclosed. The circuits described have application in analog and digital communication paths where two-way information flow exists and where a multiplicity of ports may share the same path.

The active isolator includes parallel connected common gate amplifier and common drain amplifier that are implemented using active transistors. A RF choke configured to suppress RF signal is coupled between input to the common gate amplifier and the ground such that the common gate amplifier also functions as a current source biasing the common drain amplifier.

Several embodiments of an envelope tracking active circulator is disclosed with a method to cascade them. In an active transistor based circulator (active circulator), gate (base) and drain (collector) bias voltage can be adjusted by RF or microwave input envelop signal. This is called envelop tracking active circulator. In this concept, input RF signal is detected by detection circuit, such as detection diode or coupler and converted into low frequency envelop signal by the proper filtering circuitry. The generated envelop signal controls the supply voltage of the drain and gate with the proper function of the envelop signal to improve active circulator insertion loss, isolation and power handling capability. This concept can be applied to any type of solid-state FET (Field effect transistor) transistor based active circulator, as long as they have bias dependent trans-conductance and capacitances inside. For a BJT (bipolar junction transistor) based active circulator, base bias current supply modulator will be used instead of voltage supply modulator.

The present invention is an electronic isolator that provides low input to output insertion loss, high output to input insertion loss, and substantial asymmetric isolation between a source circuit and a load circuit. The invention actively reduces noise and reflected power appearing on the isolator output. In numerous embodiments, the invention operates in circuit applications from dc through millimeter wave. Multistage electronic isolator embodiments provide increased isolation and greater noise reduction. In other embodiments, the electronic isolator also removes noise appearing on its input. In another embodiment, the invention is configured for high power applications. This embodiment includes circuitry for redirecting power away from the load into resistors or other dissipative elements. In another embodiment, the electronic isolator is configured to remove signal distortion produced by one or more power amplifiers in the system.

A broadband high frequency active MMIC circulator which includes low parasitic devices (MESFETs or HEMTs) and shunt feedback for impedance contouring in conjunction with a cascode/cascade isolation/gain network. To achieve circulation, a common series feedback node is required for each active element. While conventional active circulator topologies require the use of a resistive element for operation with a deleterious effect on noise performance, this broadband high frequency active MMIC circulator functions with either resistive or reactive common series feedback. When reactive feedback is selected, major improvements in noise performance can be realized.
