The present invention is directed to data communication. In certain embodiments, the present invention provides switching mechanism for choosing between redundant communication links. Data received from a first set of communication links are processed to have alignment markers removed, and first figure of merit value is determined based on the data without alignment markers. Similarly, a second figure of merit value is determined for the data received from the second set of communication links. A switch selects between the first set of communication links and the second set of communication links based on their respective figure of merit values. Alignment markers are inserted into the data transmitted through the selected set of data links. There are other embodiments as well.

The MAC filtering method includes setting a variable of condition on a target frame to be re-transmitted, with a relay control logic; receiving data from a physical layer; storing the received data in a relay buffer; determining whether to re-transmit the receive data; monitoring a transmission state of a MAC control logic and transmitting the received data while the MAC control logic is not used, to prevent data collision, when as a result of the determination that the receive data needs to be re-transmitted; and storing information that the received data is being transmitted, into a transmit state memory in the MAC control logic, when the received data is transmitted.

The first connection node receives, from adjacent nods, traffic information storing a pair of input and output node identifiers in association with each of storage areas included in a frame to be transmitted, where the input node identifier identifies an adjacent node from which data is inputted, and the output node identifier identifies an adjacent node to which the data is outputted. When the received traffic information includes the output node identifier identifying the second connection node, the first connection node sets a plurality of redundant path segments each including the second connection node, based on the received traffic information, where the plurality of redundant path segments includes a currently-used path segment.
