A method for manufacturing the milling cutter with the W-shaped gully of the flute using a split path grinding process is also disclosed.

The coolant nozzle carrier comprises at least two coolant nozzles and at least a center leg and two side legs that are attached to the center leg. Each of the side legs supports at least one nozzle and extends in a plane that is perpendicular to the rotational axis. The side legs are configured to accommodate the grinding disc in between the side legs with a moving gap defined between the grinding disc and the side legs.

A method of sharpening face-sharpened cutting blades for gears and the like comprising engaging a rotating grinding wheel and the cutting blade in a manner whereby the grinding wheel traverses across the cutting face along a grinding path wherein at least a portion of the grinding path is defined by a feed vector directed generally toward the cutting edge, with respect to the axis of rotation of the grinding wheel. The feed vector comprises components of (1) a first axis located in the sharpening plane and extending substantially perpendicular to the top of the cutting face, and, (2) a second axis located in the sharpening plane with the second axis being substantially perpendicular to the first axis. Preferably, the feed vector is directed perpendicular to the cutting edge.

The present invention relates to an improved method of depositing a diamond-like carbon film onto a substrate by low temperature plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) from a hydrocarbon/helium plasma. More specifically, the diamond like carbon films of the present invention are deposited onto the substrate by employing acetylene which is heavily diluted with helium as the plasma gas. The films formed using the process of the present invention are characterized as being amorphous and having dielectric strengths comparable to those normally observed for diamond films. More importantly, however is that the films produced herein are thermally stable, optically transparent, absorbent in the ultraviolet range and hard thus making them extremely desirable for a wide variety of applications.

A device for grinding cutting tools having straight and spiral grooves includes a workpiece or tool spindle which is rotatable in a housing and can be set in a combined turning and advancing motion. A roller capable of engaging the outer surface of the spindle with a certain definable contact pressure is rotatable and adjustable about an axis which extends in radial direction relative to the spindle. The device further includes a locking unit for fixing the angular position of the spindle. The roller is mounted so as to be movable back and forth in the direction of the adjusting axis by means of a first actuating unit. The roller is held in frictional contact engagement with a spindle against the force of springs. The locking unit is movable by means of a second actuating unit from the first position in which it releases the spindle into a second position in which it locks the spindle. The first actuating unit is releaseable in dependence upon the position of axial advancement of the spindle.

Cooperative driving and driven grinding and form-relieving fixtures are disclosed suitable for selective spiral grinding with both radial and end relief on spiral or straight-fluted tools such as drills, reamers, end mills, counter bores, and the like. The driving fixture embodies a differential modulating system including a single power shaft completely traversing the rotative axis of the carrier or housing of a novel differential gear unit which is coupled to the relieving fixture by concentric independently separable coupling cranks, one of which transmits the differentially modulated motor driving torque to a work spindle, and the other of which transmits a constant motor shaft torque to a sine-bar cam system on the relieving fixture for simultaneously reciprocating two cross slide tables which mount the work spindle and impart simultaneously longitudinal and lateral or radial motions to the work spindle while the latter is being rotated through the differential drive system. The concentric crank means can be selectively decoupled and:or the differential modulation can be adjusted to procure a variety of complex or simple motions of the work spindle.
