A coupling is provided for turning the shaft and includes one coupling section which is fixedly mounted on and turns with the shaft and another coupling section which surrounds the shaft and is adapted to be driven by a motor. A biasing spring urges the shaft axially of itself so that the section of the coupling on the shaft engages the section which is driven by the motor. To operate the arrangement in the event that the motor should fail, a manual crank is provided which can be engaged with a free end portion of the shaft, and an arrangement is provided which, when such engagement is effected, will displace the shaft axially in a sense separating the two coupling sections so that it is not necessary to turn against the resistance of the motor.

A worm gear is mounted on the motor shaft for rotation thereby. A worm wheel is mounted for independent rotation coaxially with respect to a first portion of a bearing shaft inside the housing on a member intermediate the bearing shaft and the wheel. The bearing shaft is supported in the housing on both sides of the worm wheel and extends transversely of the motor shaft. The worm wheel meshes with and is driven by the worm gear. A drive member is mounted coaxially with respect to a second portion of the bearing shaft, and means are provided intermediate the worm gear and the drive member for transferring rotary motion of the worm gear to the drive member.

A drive arrangement for sliding roofs, window panes, and other similar sliding members of motor vehicles is constructed for motorized operation and also for emergency manual operation. According to a preferred embodiment, the driving shaft of the drive arrangement has a first part of a clutch constrained from movement therewith and a second part displaceably mounted relative to the first part for interconnecting the drive motor with a drive pinion and for disengaging the drive pinion from the drive motor in a second relative position of the clutch parts. The driving force transmittable between the above-noted clutch parts is controlled by an adjustment member mounted on the driving shaft. The adjustment member can be connected to a manually operable handle for emergency operation of the sliding member by a handle through the use of a locking member which secures the adjustment member relative to the driving shaft in a plurality of positions.

In an electrically operated window actuating device in which power is normally transmitted from a motor to an operating cable through a reducing gear system, a manual emergency drive is provided in which a normally idling gear of the drive is mounted coaxially on the same shaft as the intermediate gear of the reducing gear system. Resilient means normally urge the driving gear of the emergency drive out of engagement with the idling gear. When the manual drive is put into operation, its driving gear actuates the idling gear and the intermediate gear of the reducing gear system thereby causing displacement of the operating cable. The housing for the apparatus is made up of symmetrical parts which can be reversed so as to fit both right and left hand side windows.
