A valve body 26 is received within the seat 20 and comprises a curved surface 28 and a planar surface 30 that extends across the curved surface 28. The valve body 26 is moveable between a closed position where the valve body 26 seals the inlet 16 and an open position where the valve body is spaced from the inlet 16 to allow air to flow through the first end 22 between the seat 20 and curved surface 28, and through a gap 38 formed between the second end 24 and an adjacent portion of the valve body 26, into the chamber 14. A spring 32 biases a valve body at a pressure of approximately one atmosphere toward the closed position.

In known inlet valves, condensation of the fuel, which is precipitated in the form of a wall film, occurs at the inlet valve, in particular when the internal combustion engine is in the cold state. Relatively large fuel droplets, which cause an increase in the harmful components in the exhaust gas, can break away from the wall film. The inlet valve according to the invention has a hollow shaft into which compressed air flows via at least one inlet shaft opening, the compressed air then flowing out again from at least one outlet opening which is provided on one side of the inlet valve facing away from the combustion space of the internal combustion engine. As a result of the outflowing compressed air, an air film is produced around the valve head, which air film prevents condensation of the fuel. The inlet valve is provided in particular for mixture-compressing, spark ignition internal combustion engines.

A fuel injection valve is provided at downstream side of a throttle valve in an intake passage, and assist air passage is introduced into an injection port of the fuel injection valve. The assist air passage is open or closed by an air control valve which is operated in synchronism with the fuel injection valve. The assist air passage pressure sensor for detecting assist air pressure is provided in the assist air passage. The malfunction of the air control valve is judged based on the assist air pressure immediately after the air control valve is operated.

A fuel supplying device for an internal combustion engine includes a fuel injector for injecting fuel into a collector or riser section of an intake manifold from which a plurality of branches extend toward cylinders of the engine. According to the invention, an induction passage is bent or provided with an elbow so that induction air will change its direction toward a heated bottom wall of the riser section before entering the same and the fuel injector is arranged so as to inject fuel toward the bottom wall and radially inwardly into a flow of induction air passing through the induction passage. With this the amount of fuel flowing along the riser walls has been considerably reduced, thus enhancing the response characteristics.

A device for completely vaporizing the fuel delivered to an internal combustion engine so as to minimize the emission of air pollutants. The device includes a heat conducting tubular housing, a heat conducting screen within and coaxial with the housing with an annular space between the housing and the screen, a heat conducting helical coil within the annular space and coaxial with the housing and the screen, and means for heating the helical coil, either electrically, or with heated air. In one form, a diffuser within and coaxial with the screen adjacent the inlet of the housing directs a fuel and air mixture outwardly into contact with the screen, helical coil and housing. In another form, a fuel injecting means within and coaxial with the screen adjacent the inlet end of the housing sprays fuel toward the outlet end of the housing and outwardly against the screen. A de-icer tube communicates with the inlet end of the housing for delivering heated air thereto under icing conditions.

Each opening restricts the introduction of air to a small volume insufficient to cause cross turbulence of air-fuel stream in the intake passage, and the sum total area of the openings is made not to exceed 30% of the total air intake area for the carburetor.
