Die Erfindung bezieht sich auf ein Verfahren und eine Vorrichtung zur Bestimmung der spezifischen Emissionen als Abgas-Kennzahl eines Verbrennungsmotors. Das Verfahren ist dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass der Abgas-Massenstrom (3) als erste Betriebs-Kenngröße und die Motor-Abgabeleistung (2) als zweite Betriebs-Kenngröße bestimmt werden, dass der Stickoxid-Massenstrom (3) und die Motor-Abgabeleistung (2) aus jeweils mindestens einer von der Betriebs-Kenngröße abweichenden Messgröße abgeleitet werden und die Abgas-Kennzahl als Quotient aus dem korrigierten Abgas-Massenstrom (3) und der Motor-Abgabeleistung (2) berechnet wird.

An improved NOX control for an internal combustion engine having an exhaust system with a NOX storage catalyst (105) includes a gas composition sensor (110) upstream of the NOX catalyst. Whether the NOX catalyst is storing NOX onto the catalyst or purging NOX from the catalyst is estimated from the signal output from the gas composition sensor. The composition of exhaust gasses input to the catalyst is also estimated using variables like engine load, engine speed, engine temperature and space velocity of the exhaust gases. This enables the NOX flow rate input to the catalyst and the aggregate quantity of NOX stored on the catalyst to be estimated.

The invention relates to a device and a method for controlling a rate of recirculated exhaust gas (AGR rate) of an exhaust gas recirculation device (AGR device) for combustion engines during lean operation. A correcting variable is predetermined for a control means of the AGR device. Said control means is arranged in a line for recirculated exhaust gas. A desired rate of recirculated exhaust gas is adjusted or maintained by means of said variable. According to the invention, a divergence of a calculated pollutant emission from a pollutant emission that is measured in the exhaust gas section (14) of the combustion engine (10) by means of a pollutant sensor (18) is detected and a correction value is determined for the correcting variable of the control means (28) of the AGR device (12) according to an amount of the divergence.

The invention relates to a method for running a diesel engine with an engine control system which regulates the running of said diesel engine according to mappings and which enables the fuel mixture of the engine to regulated between lean and rich. The engine control system has a computer which causes the diesel engine to switch over to a rich or lean mixture according to certain predetermined switching criteria, a sensor unit which communicates with said computer and which monitors the parameters which are necessary for the switching criteria, and a memory which also communicates with the computer and in which the mappings for the running of the diesel engine are stored. The computer effects a switch-over from a lean mixture to a rich mixture when all of the related switching criteria are met and effects a switch back from a rich mixture to a lean mixture when at least one of the criteria related to this is met.
