Such constituents could e.g. be mycotoxins, such as deoxynivalenol, zearalenone, ochratoxin, fumonisin, aflatoxin, and 1-2 toxin, and/or enzymes such as amylase in general, or alpha-amylase in specific. The system (100; 200) comprises containers (10; 12; 14; 16) for the sample and for liquids used during the measurements. The container (10) for the sample comprises grinding means (20) for grinding the sample and inlet means (11 ) for inletting solvent liquid from another container (12), preferably during the grinding so as to speed up the extraction of constituents from the first sample. The system (100, 200) moreover comprises a sensor (50) for measuring the concentration of the one or more specific constituents, which may be a biosensor or another type of biosensing system.

Apparatus, methods, and systems for useful sampling of seed, wherein viability is maintained, are disclosed. Seed from one generation in a plant advancement experiment is individually sampled by removal and collection of tissue from the seed using a hand-held and manually operated tool having one or more cutting edges. The tissue is then processed to derive one or more biochemical, genetic, or phenotypic characteristic of the seed before a decision is made whether to utilize that seed further in a plant advancement experiment or other plant research and development. In some embodiments of the method, the sampling is controlled to remove a useful amount of tissue for analytical purposes without significant effect on viability potential of the sampled seed. In some embodiments, the sampling is controlled to deter contamination of the sample. In some embodiments, the seed is held in pre-determined orientation to facilitate efficient and accurate sampling.

Procedures and means for evaluating effectiveness of bacterial-lethality, following batch-processed containerized food production operations and aseptic-flow food-production operations as containerized in aseptic-containers, in preparing for non-refrigerated marketing are described. The evaluations significantly expedite determining whether thermally-processed containerized food-production is safe for non-refrigerated marketing. The presence or absence of live spore-forming bacteria is determined chemically free of extended storage requirements relying on a mechanical-failure indication of food-spoilage. Also, a biological-indication verification of microbial- biocidal status of the packaged food is made available. The invention determines whether rigid-sheet metal containers, and/or whether any of the new, and newly developing, non-refrigerated food packages, which largely utilize polymeric materials, for convenient microwave-oven heating of opened-packs, and soft polymeric pouch products, are safe for non-refrigerated marketing; and, such determinations are made substantially more concurrently with production-operations, than previously available.

A method for using stable isotope profiling and optionally trace element profiling to differentiate the origin of commodities, such as pistachios (Pistachio vera), or salmon, is disclosed. Isotope ratios can be determined using any suitable method, such as stable isotope mass spectrometer. Geographic regions were well separated based on isotope ratios. Seasonal effects were found to affect some isotopes for some regions.
