Trailer brake wear is reduced by penalizing an operator of the tractor for each unauthorized activation of the manual trailer brake control. Testing of the connection of the tractor to the trailer is encouraged by tracking the activation of the manual trailer brake control and penalizing the operator for failure to test the connection.

This invention concerns parking brake systems which, as a rule, are electromechanically actuatable and, under current legal requirements, require an auxiliary actuating device (17) which, upon failure of the electrical system for example, permits auxiliary actuation (release or engagement) of the parking brake system. For embodiments of such electromechanical parking brake systems with electrically actuatable actuators (1) directly on the parking brake, the invention proposes auxiliary actuating devices (17) in several variants which essentially consist of a control element (39) within reach of the driver and operated by muscle power and a transmission element (22, 38, 45). In the process, the transmission of the actuating force can be done both pneumatically and mechanically in case of auxiliary operation or emergency operation, starting from the control element (39) via the transmission element (22, 38, 45) to the actuator (1) and the parking brake. Auxiliary operation using pneumatic power transmission considerably simplifies installation of supply cable for the electromechanically actuatable parking brake provides ease of operation.

A steering wheel (11) is fitted with a control (13) which, when operated in mutually independent control directions (41-45), controls the acceleration and deceleration of the vehicle, as well as upward and downward gear changing, and activates one of a number of cruise control functions. The control (13) may preferably be mounted immediately adjacent to the steering wheel rim (15) on the upper side of a wheel spoke (12), so that it may readily be operated by the driver's thumb without the necessity of releasing the grip on the wheel. Thus, the control incorporates all of the most essential driving control functions. The control according to the present invention encourages the driver to select, at an early stage, those accelerator and gear-change parameters which are most advantageous to economic driving or are most suited to the prevailing traffic conditions, the control actions required involving a minimum of manual movements. The present invention also relates to an arrangement and a method of controlling servo devices for the driving of a motor vehicle, utilising the control (13) mounted on the steering wheel.
