Abstract:
The present invention relates to methods and apparatus for the controlled placement of a shear-thinnable polymer composition into a moving web. The controlled placement is preferably performed by applying the polymer composition onto a surface of a moving web, shear thinning the composition and placing it into the web, and curing the polymer composition. A preferred apparatus includes one or more process heads that has mounted thereto a rigid knife blade for engagement with the moving web. The knife blade is movable vertically and rotationally. The process head is also movable horizontally along the path of the moving web. A plurality of macro and micro tension zones are established and are monitored for controlling the apparatus and process. Additional measurements of web density, micro porosity, placement of an internal layer of polymer within the web, analysis of elements on the treated web, and the size of the polymer bead applied to the moving web are measured for controlling online the apparatus and the process of this invention. This method and apparatus produces webs that either has some of its structural elements encapsulated by the polymer composition while at least some of the interstitial spaces of the web are open; or has an internal layer extending through the web in a direction generally spaced from at least one major surface thereof; or has both encapsulated structural elements and an internal layer of polymer composition.

The invention concerns a method for measuring the thickness of a coating on paper (12) coated by means of a blade-like element (20) which applies the coating composition to a web of paper (12) as it passes over a roller. The invention calls for the deviation of the blade (20) to be continuously determined near the blade tip (36) by non-contact measurement. This enables the distance from the blade edge to the surface of the paper (12) to be continuously determined by simple trigonometric calculation and, from the fixed relationship between this distance and the coating thickness, the coating thickness to be continuously determined in the immediate vicinity of the applicator (18, 26). The invention also concerns a device designed to carry out the method and a particular use of this device for the simultaneous determination of the viscosity of the coating compound.

The present invention relates to a colmating improvement device for cork stoppers, comprising at least three cylindrical shaped rotating means (5), able to receive a cork stopper entering in a rotational movement with a slight pressure, which stopper is inserted through an insertion tubular device (1) assisted by two pneumatic cylinders (2 and 3). The device further comprises two openings, an inlet opening (4) and an outlet opening (S) and preferably two electric motors with reduction gears (6 and 8), a worm (9), a chain (7) and a tank (10) that can contain a substance consisting of a binder and cork dust with a solid content between 50 and 100 %.

In a coating apparatus (10), which coats an object to be coated with a viscous coating material while causing a moving part (40) to move a flat nozzle (20) that discharges the coating material, the nozzle (20) includes a cylinder (30) that applies predetermined pressing force F to the nozzle (20) towards the object to be coated. The cylinder (30) forms a gap (G) between the object to be coated and the nozzle (20) by moving the nozzle (20) in a direction away from the object to be coated to a position where discharge reaction force (R) is balanced with pressing force (F). The discharge reaction force (R) is generated when the nozzle (20) discharges the coating material to the object to be coated.

A method of coating a substrate with a liquid comprising a catalyst component, which substrate comprises a plurality of channels, wherein the method comprises: (a) holding the substrate vertically; (b) introducing the liquid into the substrate through the open ends of the channels at a lower end of the substrate; and (c) after the lower end of the substrate has been part-filled with the liquid, applying a vacuum to the open ends of the channels at the upper end of the substrate while introducing the liquid into the substrate.

Electrode mixture paste (5) is applied to the opposite surfaces of a strip-form core material (1) while the core material is allowed to travel in its longitudinal direction, the paste (5)-applied core material (1) is passed through a gap between a pair of scraping jigs (16a, 16b) to regulate the coating thickness of the paste (5), and a chip (18) provided on each scraping jigs (16a, 16b) is used to scrape off the paste (5) to form a mixture coating with a specified width and paste (5) scraped off by the chip (18) is allowed to reflux through a groove (19) formed on the upstream side in the core material traveling direction of the chip (18) to thereby prevent the increasing phenomenon of coating thickness at opposite side ends of the mixture coating. Accordingly, an electrode mixture paste applying method is realized that can avoid a process trouble such as the deformation of a mixture coated sheet while preventing the increasing phenomenon of coating thickness at opposite side ends of the mixture coating.
