Abstract:
A method and system for providing targeted advertisements over a networked media delivery system, especially interactive television networks, the system comprising tracking and storing viewer selections, analyzing the selections, and delivering targeted advertisements that appeal to the particular subscriber making the selections, the system including a merge processor, a file server, a profile processor, and a broadcast server contained in a head end in communication with a plurality of set-top boxes through a distribution network. Based on a subscriber's viewing habits and account information, the present invention delivers different, customized advertisements to different viewers watching the same program or channel. The present invention delivers the advertisements as either still frame bit maps or as video streams advertisement insertion in a playlist or a broadcast media program.
Abstract:
The most preferred embodiment of the present invention is a computer-based decision support system that includes three main components: a database mining engine (DME) (127); an advertising optimization mechanism (128); and a customized user interface (125) that provides access to the various features of the invention. The user interface (125), in conjunction with the DME (128), provides a unique and innovative way to store, retrieve and manipulate data from existing databases containing media-related audience access data, which describe the access habits and preferences of the media audience. By using a database with a simplified storage and retrieval protocol, the data contained therein can be effectively manipulated in real time. This means that previously complex and lengthy information retrieval and analysis activities can be accomplished in very short periods of time (typically seconds instead of minutes or even hours). Further, by utilizing the advertising optimization mechanism (128) of the present invention, businesses, networks, and advertising agencies can interactively create, store, rank and compare various proposed or actual advertising strategies in a simple and efficient manner. This allows the decision-makers to more effectively tailor their marketing efforts and successfully reach the desired target market while conserving scarce advertising capital. Finally, the user interface (125) for the system provides access to both the DME (127) and the optimization mechanism in a simple and straightforward manner, significantly reducing training time.
Abstract:
A cooperative electronic media measurement system is disclosed which uses media handlers to obtain information from, or otherwise obtain information about, presented media objects, including identification tags, if present, for collection by research data collection agents and subsequent dispatch to a centralized media research controller. The media research controller registers advertisements and other media for subsequent measurement and provides a unique identification tag that may be added to, or associated with, the existing media object. Media objects are presented to a panel member by a panel member-computing device which may receive media objects by means of a network connection, from one or more local sources, or generate media objects in real-time, or a combination thereof. One or more research data collection agents are assigned to measure each panel member's exposure to and interactions with electronic media. Cooperative media handlers automatically obtain information from, or otherwise obtain information about, presented media objects including identification tags, if present, and other information, for collection by the research data collection agents. A research data collection agent will track a panel member, and collect such transmissions from the cooperative media handlers, when a panel member is in the scope of the research data collection agent. The research data collection agent (i) creates log entry objects from transmissions received from the cooperative media handlers and places the log entry objects into an unfiltered media queue, (ii) confirms the integrity of the messages and filters out unnecessary log entry objects from the unfiltered media queue to create a filtered media queue, (iii) creates dispatch objects using objects from the filtered media queue and places created dispatch objects into a dispatch queue, and (iv) transmits dispatch objects from the dispatch queue to the media research controller, when resources are available.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to a method of collecting data concerning participant response to broadcast material which comprises a combined audience portion and data portion, each participant being located at separate remote locations and having a data collection unit with a respective unique identity and comprising a store means, a validity checking means and a manually operable device; the method comprising: (a) transmitting broadcast material to the participant locations according to a known schedule, the broadcast material comprising an audience portion and a data portion containing a validity defining portion capable of defining a valid or invalid transmission; (b) storing a data record associated with said broadcast material to the store means of a data collection unit according to a predetermined participant operation of the manually operable device in response to said audience portion of said broadcast material provided that the validity checking means confirms the validity of said data validity defining portion; and (c) cross matching said stored data records with said known schedule to ascertain a participant response to particular broadcast material.
Abstract:
Apparatus and method for ordering supplemental information about programs playing at a broadcast receiver. The method includes the steps of reproducing in the vicinity of each of a plurality of users, programs from one of a plurality of broadcast stations (601); recording upon command by a user, an identification of a station and a time of a program on the station for which supplemental information is desired by the user (609); entering the recorded station identification and time into one of a plurality of information exchange terminals (607); coupling the information exchange terminal to the information depository to transmit information therebetween (162); and identifying a correspondence between the entered station identification and time and a program in a station log to obtain the desired supplementatl information.
Abstract:
According to aspects of the invention there are provided a method for distributing content from one or more content sources over a communications network to a plurality of users by a content distribution system, the content distribution system comprising a master node and a plurality of local nodes in communication with the master node, each local node serving a group of users from the plurality of users, the method comprising: maintaining, at the master node, a content directory associated with a plurality of content items from the one or more content sources, the content directory comprising content location data for the plurality of content items and information associated with each of the content items; generating, at each local node, user content location data for each user in the group of users based on selecting a plurality of content items from the content directory according to a user profile of each user, the user content location data for each user including locations of the selected content items; and transmitting, by the local node, the user content location data for each user to a content player associated with said each user for use in retrieving the corresponding content items from the one or more content sources for seamless playback of the selected content items.
Abstract:
According to aspects of the invention there are provided a method for modifying a content stream distributed to one or more users, the method comprising: generating a content stream comprising a plurality of content items from one or more content providers; constructing one or more filters for modifying the content steam, wherein the one or more filters is constructed by defining one or more parameters relating the content items; applying the one or more filters to the content stream; selecting one or more content items from the content stream based on defined parameters; and modifying the content stream by applying the constructed filter to the plurality of content items in the content stream.
Abstract:
To view media, a user may select a media stream by operating a portable device that controls a media presentation device. The portable device may be configured to multicast this stream selection to both the media presentation device and a selection analysis machine. The remote control may have or include both an infrared emitter and a cellular telephone, and the stream selection may be sent both to the media presentation device and to the selection analysis machine. The selection analysis machine may receive and store stream selections over a period of time, and these aggregated stream selections may form all or part of a profile of a user or a group of users who use the media presentation device. This profile may indicate viewing habits and choices of one or more users of the media presentation device, and the selection analysis machine may analyze this profile.
