Corn oil is extracted from corn to form a corn meal. Processing the corn grain to obtain the oil, meal, and other product streams generally includes dividing the corn kernel by fractionating to create a higher oil fraction and a lower oil fraction, forming a solvent extractable structure from the higher oil fraction, and extracting the oil from the higher oil fraction. The extracted corn oil is useful for making nutritionally enhanced edible oil or cooking oil, lubricants, biodiesel, fuel, cosmetics and oil-based or oil-containing chemical products. The extracted corn meal is useful for making enhanced animal feed rations, snack food, blended food products, cosmetics, and fermentation broth additive. The lower oil fraction is useful for one or more processes such as fermentation, wet-milling, animal feed production, sweetener production, and starch production, making enhanced animal feed rations, snack food, blended food products, and cosmetics.

Poly(β-amino esters) prepared from the conjugate addition of bis(secondary amines) or primary amines to a bis(acrylate ester) are described. Methods of preparing these polymers from commercially available starting materials are also provided. These tertiary amine-containing polymers are preferably biodegradable and biocompatible and may be used in a variety of drug delivery systems. Given the poly(amine) nature of these polymers, they are particularly suited for the delivery of polynucleotides. Nanoparticles containing polymer/polynucleotide complexes have been prepared. The inventive polymers may also be used to encapsulate other agents to be delivered. They are particularly useful in delivering labile agents given their ability to buffer the pH of their surroundings. A system for preparing and screening polymers in parallel using semi-automated robotic fluid delivery systems is also provided.

The invention relates to an oxidative thermochemical drying process for changing the hydrophilic and hydrophobic characteristics of organic substances, in particular naturally occurring organic substances, to prepare a new class of hydrophobic oleophilic products, and a new class of hydrophilic oleophilic ones. The process comprises moistening and heating the raw materials in a thermochemical convection apparatus or kiln equipped with a gas flow system, in an oxidizing medium for a predetermined period of time. The efficiency of the treatment can be improved by pretreatments of the raw materials, such as by boiling in water, by soaking in acidic or alkaline solution, by mechanically expanding, by adding volatile reagents and by freezing. One unique pretreatment with carbonate or bicarbonate of the raw materials results in hydrophilic oleophilic bi-functional products. The series of the hydrophobic oleophilic and hydrophilic oleophilic products made from different natural substances under various oxidative thermochemical drying processes have different characteristics and are low-cost, efficient, biodegradable, environmentally harmless and widely useful.

Disclosed is a method for manufacturing a biodegradable vessel. A herbal material selected from the group consisting of pine needles, Artemisia absinthium, rutin-containing leaves, Ranunculus Asiaticus, Diospyros khaki, leaves of Gingko biloba LINNE, bamboo leaves, Osmanthus heterophylla P. S. Green, Selaginellae Herba, Viscum album var. coloratum Ohwi, Viscum coloratum (Komar) Nakai, leaves of Eucommia ulmoides OLIVER, leaves of Euonymus japonica Thunb., leaves of Thuja occidentalis, and mixtures thereof is washed, dried and pulverized to powder. The herbal material is admixed in a weight ratio of 70∼99.5 % : 0.5∼30 % with sepiolite, vermiculite, pearlite, or mixtures thereof. The resulting mixture is further mixed in a weight ratio of 80∼95 % : 5∼20 % with a binder, followed by stirring to homogeneity. The homogenous mixture is molded at 70∼120 °C to a desired form. The vessel is naturally readily degraded and beneficial to the health of users because the materials are obtained from nature and have medicinal effects.

Composite materials are manufactured by subjecting a vegetable material containing fibre, or a mixture of such vegetable materials, to at least one thermoplastic processing step, such as extrusion, compression moulding, injection moulding, vacuum moulding or film blowing. The thermoplastic processing may be carried out in the presence of a bonding agent, for example a chemical bonding agent such as urea-formaldehyde, or a protein (which protein may be contained in the vegetable material or added to it). Prior to the thermoplastic processing step(s), the vegetable material(s) are subjected to at least one preliminary treatment, for example a heat treatment, addition of an alkali, grinding, wetting, washing, defibrillation, blending and/or mixing. The product of the thermoplastic processing step(s) may be subjected to an after-treatment, for example drying and/or curing. Vegetable materials include soybean, sunflower, rapeseed, oil palm, cocoa, flax, wheat and barley products. The vegetable material(s) may be mixed with additives prior to and/or during the thermoplastic processing step(s), for example water, glycerol, glyoxal, glutaric dialdehyde, lecithin, wood-based raw materials and/or a colorant. The composites may be formed in a variety of configurations, including board, sheets and films, and may find use as constructional items for use in the building, construction, furniture or cabinetry industries.

The dissolved or colloidally dispersed polymers provide substantial reinforcemement and physical property improvememnt to polyurethane or polyurea polymers made from the polyisocyanate solution or dispersion.
