The invention relates to a method for manufacturing a metal belt (102) used in a paper/board or finishing machine. In the method, the metal belt is formed by placing metal belt blanks (10a; 10b; 10c) in an amount necessitated by a belt of required width and length side by side and/or in succession and by welding the seams (11a; 11b, 12, 12a) between them to form an endless metal belt. In the method, the seams are welded from the outside against a fixed backing as TIG- or MIG/MAG-welding, and the grinding of the metal belt (102) to its final thickness is carried out essentially only on the outer surface.

A method of jointing woven belting, primarily but not necessarily, to produce an endless conveyor belt for use in the biscuit and flour confectionery industries comprises the steps of cutting parallel edges (2) across each of the two ends of the fabric (1) to be jointed and aligning the parallel edges (2) and the free ends (3) of cut yarns in the opposing parallel edges with one another. The free ends (3) of the yarns are then covered with a fusible pliable material (15), such as polyurethane strips (10, 12, 13), which is melted and cast into the gap (9) defined between the adjacent parallel edges (2). In this way the free yarn ends (3) are encased in the pliable material and the gap (9) is filled with the pliable material (15) to substantially the same depth as the thickness of the woven fabric (1). The pliable material is cooled to set and thereby joint the two ends of the fabric (1) together. Advantageously, the surfaces of the fusible pliable material (15) on both faces of the fabric (1) are impressed with a pattern to simulate the surface texture of the woven faces of the fabric (1) as the pliable material sets (15).

A method and apparatus are provided for forming a joint in an elongate article formed from a thermoplastic material, for example an escalator handrail (120) or a conveyor belt, which also includes a plurality of reinforcing cables and a slider fabric. End parts of the article (120) are held in a mold (12) and heated to remelt the material. Portions adjacent the end parts are chilled, at ends of the mold, to prevent remelting. The molten end parts then fuse, and the molten joint is then cooled to resolidify the material and form the joint. With reinforcing cables (126) being present, these can be cut into an interlace pattern, which advantageously is provided in just a layer of the article rather than extending through the full depth of the article. A top layer (160) can then be replaced by a separate top cap of the material of the body of the article. Where a slider is present, to provide an effective interlacing effect, a bottom layer or portion of a handrail is cut at an inclined angle, to form an inclined joint in the slider.
