Abstract:
Apparatus and methods are described for use in mixing of fluids or mixing ingredients into fluids by means of a static mixer assembly (i.e. without requiring moving mechanical parts, where fluid flow is used to achieve mixing). The static mixer assembly is a cylindrical tube with three pairs of fins extending inward from the inner wall of the tube. The central fins form a prow pointing upstream, with two pairs of flanking fins arranged to prevent unhindered fluid flow parallel to the central axis of the tube a peripheral region, whilst allowing unobstructed flow in a central region and extending to a peripheral region near the inner wall opposite the prow. The fins force fluid outwards along the inner walls from the prow towards the unobstructed peripheral region opposite the prow and additionally fluid spills over the inner edges of the fins into the central region. The resulting flow pattern provides excellent mixing with a low ratio of pressure drop to volumetric flow rate across the assembly. Ingredients inserted into the unobstructed peripheral region opposite the prow are rapidly homogenised into flowing fluid.

Abstract:
A fuel injector for vaporizing a liquid fuel for use in an internal combustion engine. The fuel injector includes at least one capillary flow passage (12) , the at least one capillary flow passage (12) having an inlet end (14) and an outlet end (16), the capillary flow passage comprises a channel formed within a monolithic body produced from a material selected from the group consisting of ceramics, polymers, metals and composites thereof or a multi-layer ceramic body, a fluid control valve (18) for placing the inlet end of the at least one capillary flow passage (12) in fluid communication with the liquid fuel source and introducing the liquid fuel in a substantially liquid state, a heat source (20) arranged along the at least one capillary flow passage, the heat source (20) operable to heat the liquid fuel in the at least one capillary flow passage (12) to a level sufficient to change at least a portion thereof from the liquid state to a vapor state and deliver a stream of substantially vaporized fuel from the outlet end of the at least one capillary flow passage.
Abstract:
A static mixer comprising a group of deflector elements distributed within a conduit through which a fluid flows in a direction generally parallel to an axis of the conduit. Each deflector element defines a surface which is inclined to the conduit axis such that the fluid is deflected by the surface in a direction transverse to that axis. The deflector elements are positioned so as to generate an asymmetric vortex flow such that the intensities of adjacent vortices are different. The deflection elements may be in the form of, for example, asymmetric pairs of tabs, for example space apart pairs of tabs of different lengths. The angle of inclination of the tabs to the conduit axis may be adjustable.
Abstract:
A method and an apparatus are described for use in the irradiation of fluids. The apparatus has an elongate conduit (312) having a central axis (334) and two or more elongate ultraviolet radiation sources (114) extending along the interior of the conduit for irradiation of the fluid within the conduit. An array of static mixer elements (300) is located within the conduit, and the two or more elongate ultraviolet radiation sources (114) are arranged to extend through apertures in deflection surfaces of the static mixer elements making up the array (300). The apparatus and method allows for reliable and uniform ultraviolet irradiation of fluids of low UV transmissivity, such as turbid fluids, particularly for ultraviolet disinfection of such fluids. Wipers may be fitted to the static mixer elements to enable relative movement between the static mixer elements and the surfaces of the elongate ultraviolet radiation sources to clean the surfaces of the sources without need to dismantle the apparatus.
Abstract:
A mixer system including a bowl for receiving a material to be mixed, a mixer body having a rotatable output component, and a hinge. The bowl is pivotable about the hinge relative to the mixer body such the bowl can be pivoted between a loading/unloading position and a closed position relative the mixer body. The mixer system further includes a locking mechanism located at least partially on one of the bowl or the mixer body, the locking mechanism being normally biased into a locking position. At least a portion the bowl or the mixer body interacts with the locking mechanism to move the locking mechanism toward the release position to allow the bowl to move to the closed position, the locking mechanism being movable back toward the locking position when the bowl is in the closed position to retain the bowl in the closed position.
Abstract:
A method for promoting prostate helath in a subject comprising administering a dose of calcium to the subject. Particularly provided is a method for reducing the risk of prostate carcinomas, comprising administering a dose of elemental calcium effective to reduce the risk of prostate cancer. In an example, 1200 mg of elemental calcium (supplied in 3000 mg of calcium carbonate) administered twice daily resulted in decreased risk of prostate cancer.
