Further provided is a cartridge system comprising: (a) a reagent component for storing one or more reagents; and (b) a processing component for processing the one or more reagents in an assay; wherein one or more of the components comprise one or more reagent bodies, wherein each body comprises one or more reagents confined by a restraining agent, wherein the restraining agent is capable of being broken down to release the one or more reagents, and wherein the one or more reagents are dispersed through the restraining agent; and further wherein the reagent component and the processing component are configured to be coupled together to form a cartridge, and wherein the reagent component and/or the processing component comprise at least one compartment configured to accept waste from the assay, the reagent component not taking part in processing the reagents in the assay, except to accept waste from the processing component.
Abstract:
The invention relates to a method for screening for the effects of non-genotoxic carcinogens in an animal model. The invention also relates to animal models that are suitable for use in such a method, and cell lines derived from these animals for in vitro screening purposes. More specifically, the invention relates to a transgenic rodent animal which has been humanised for the nuclear transcription factors CAR, PXR and PPARa, and in which the endogenous equivalent genes have been rendered inoperable.
Abstract:
Authentication in an ad-hoc network is established between a first device (for example a service-requesting device) and a second device (for example a service-providing device) using a third device (a peer device). An authentication request is transmitted from the first device to the second device. The second device transmits a query message to at least one third device (i.e. peer device). If the peer device has previously been authenticated with the first device, the peer device sends an authentication credential, for example an authentication key, to the first and second devices. Upon receiving the authentication credential, the first device sends the authentication credential to the second device. The second device then compares the authentication credential received from the first device with the authentication credential received from the third device, and authenticates the first device with the second device if the authentication credentials match. Preferably the authentication credential from the third (peer) device to the first device is encrypted.
Abstract:
Provided is a method for determining the presence or absence of a pathogen in a sample, which method comprises : a) contacting the sample with a whole or a part of a cell surface receptor protein capable of binding the pathogen; b) allowing the cell surface receptor protein or part thereof to bind the pathogen;c) determining the presence or absence of the pathogen bound to the receptor protein or part thereof.
Abstract:

Further provided is a cartridge system comprising: (a) a reagent component for storing one or more reagents; (b) a processing component for processing one or more reagents in an assay; and (c) a sensing component comprising at least one sensing element for detecting an analyte; wherein the reagent component, the processing component and the sensing component are separate components configured to be coupled together to form a cartridge. Still further provided is a cartridge system comprising: (a) a reagent component for storing one or more reagents; (b) a processing component for processing one or more reagents in an assay; and (c) a sample preparation component for preparing a sample for the assay; wherein the reagent component and the processing component are configured to be coupled together to form a cartridge.
Abstract:
The present application relates to techniques for handling the execution of a computer software program comprising a plurality of distinct program components. In particular, the application describes techniques relating to the interaction between distinct components of a computer program and seeks to allow program components to execute with a high degree of determinism. An execution environment is described which is operable such that the execution of one or more components of a computer program is carried out in a plurality of sequential frames of execution, wherein the execution environment is further operable to: i) allow communication between one said component and another said component in different frames of execution; and ii) to prevent communication between one said component and another said component in the same frame of execution. A debugger which utilises the execution environment is also described.
Abstract:
An optical system, such as a microscope or spectroscope, for stimulating a sample and collecting fluoresced light emitted from that sample. The system has a focusing element for focusing light onto the sample, and a collector for collecting light emitted from the sample and directing it towards a detector. To reduce the effects of background fluorescence, the focusing element is a diffractive optical element.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to transgenic non-human animals, tissues or cells derived therefrom and methods of producing them. The transgenic non-human animals or tissues or cells derived therefrom provide a system capable of expressing human proteins responsible for drug metabolism in place of the homologous endogenous non-human animal proteins and for the controlled expression of human genes introduced into the animal so that the expression of the human genes is regulated in a manner more closely analogous to that seen in vivo in humans.
